@cstross I mean if he was really motivated he could buy make-up (the really thick kind) and put it over his face to cover the tattoos 🤷🏻‍♀️

This guy’s going to be dismissed and made the butt of jokes … but he shouldn’t be.

This is an accessible-to-non-experts demonstration of the flaws in facial recognition/verification and the dangers of this program. How many people have facial characteristics outside of the norm? “The norm” being what the recognition machine is trained on.

What about hypertrichinosis? Facial injury? Vitiligo? Or a different skin tone?

And what happens when this type of verification is used for essential social services access?

I myself could not open a bank account with a certain institution because the match-face-with-ID system kept failing. It didn’t tell me to take off a mask, sure, but it couldn’t reconcile my shorter hair and weight changes with an ID photo a few years old.

In that case, bank lost a customer. What if it were the only way I could book medical care?

The error tolerance in these systems should be absolutely zero. If they fail, ever, for one single person, they should not be used. And it should never be on the user to accommodate the system.

It’s a human rights violation.

@johannab spot on! Thank you for raising these issues Johanna. What is happening is truly disturbing
