https://archive.is/xjRGH a fraud is being perpetrated in this industry.
it's important to say that plainly and not forget it, because the people perpetrating it currently have the credulous ear of the NYT and others.
"most experts acknowledge", yet only one of the three big companies you reached out to was even marginally in accord with this, the one pouring billions into the dirt on it, who is currently in last place in the console space. hmm
note how even the "AI" in Pac-Man is being elevated and mystified here in a way that nobody in the industry really did at the time; the techniques it used were impressive and of interest but there was no mystification, because ultimately it was a very understandable set of techniques. the complexity of the current bullshit is meant to muddle, mislead and impress the gullible.
people are still figuring out how to do new impressive things in videogames all the time! it's a creative field with tons of talented people who've stuck with it despite the industry part of it being an exploitative horrorshow.
imagine being the kind of grifter who stands near that and tells the paper of record, "my fucked up computer program is going to do something so much cooler than all those chumps using their brains and relying on one another, they'll be out of a job in five years".
@jplebreton i feel like all these outlets are deliberately conflating NPC AI with LLMs to make gamers think this is just the next step.
@mehluv absolutely yeah, we've been calling various useful things in games "AI" for decades as a shorthand, and the hypelords caught the scent of something they could use.
