@osm_tech I like the idea of a vector tile layer but this current design looks more than a background layer and not like a map of its own right like the old carto style.
@osm_tech Ah, just looked further. Maptiler OMT is more similar to the old style and more a map of its own right.
@giggls For extra fun with the "Maptiler OMT" layer switch the language top right. Many languages are supported. Layer kindly supplied by https://www.maptiler.com/ more to follow.

@giggls The layer is basic, but the new stack behind is the real achievement. More to come, watch this space ;-)
@osm_tech is maptiler omt what will eventually replace carto as default?
@eatham @osm_tech no shortbread is the house style - it's basic for now so get involved and help improve it!
@tomh @osm_tech oh, why not omt? It seems much more complete and (in my opinion) it looks nicer.
@eatham @osm_tech Well that's kind of the point - to start with something basic and let the community build it!
@tomh @osm_tech personally I think starting from omt which already looks decent (like a high res carto) and improving it from there is better, but if shortbread improves alot it'll be good too with time. I think it could be improved by removing the fake 3d effect on buildings, it doesn't look great with them. Where would I post suggestions for the map style?

@tomh @osm_tech Also, I think that there should be a public vote before changing the default map to avoid it being randomly changed like with the stupid 'dark mode' change without community agreement

And if the vote allows voting for multiple map styles, which it should, it must have preferential voting to not split the carto and omt vote, as they are similar styles who would probably prefer each other

@eatham you don’t get to order volunteer developers around by “public vote”, that’s not how open source works
@richardf not devs, I mean before changing styles to a new one on the main site

@eatham @tomh @osm_tech Because OpenMapTiles has a CC-BY license.

I feel you, OpenMapTiles is extremely polished compared to Shortbread at this point.

@bart @tomh @osm_tech does it really matter that much if maptiler is included in the copyright info corner?

@eatham @tomh @osm_tech When you use MapTiler's API you need to attribute MapTiler, when you use tiles based on the OpenMapTiles schema you need to attribute OpenMapTiles.

I think that is the reason why a new vector tile schema was conceived. Otherwise users of OpenStreetMap vector tiles would not need to attribute OpenStreetMap but also OpenMapTiles...

@bart @eatham @osm_tech Well more to the point ideally we want an open OSMF run style as a future default rather then something from a third party with commercial interests so we want to encourage development of shortbread with that aim in mind as per the strategy announced in https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2024/02/11/2024-announcing-the-year-of-the-openstreetmap-vector-maps/
2024: announcing the year of the OpenStreetMap vector maps | OpenStreetMap Blog

@tomh @eatham @osm_tech Although I guess if it weren't CC-BY OSMF could just fork it. That would have been a lot easier than inventing something from scratch.

@osm_tech For people using the "Better osm.org" user script by deevroman, it's incompatible with the vector layers for now.

Edit: an update has been released. Re-enable and update!

@midgard

more precisely you just need to update it 😉

@osm_tech The OMT layer is a vector map has no aliasing on my laptop. Can/Should this be fixed?
@osm_tech I love the crisp and dynamic rendering, thanks for your efforts.
The current Shrotbread style is unfortunately rather car-centric, basic, and missing what I love most about OSM data: all these details at a glance. MapTiler OMT is more to my taste.
