Yeah, let's give an American company access to loads of government data and pay them a load of money to run the government for us using software that systematically fabricates false information and has nasty racial biases. That'll surely stimulate the UK economy.

@neuralreckoning

I learnt only last week that publishers are making agreements with AI companies to mine *our* papers without royalties.

& in other news... yesterday was the day that the first offers from five publishers should have been released.

@neuralreckoning

it feels like Groundhog day, but on a 3 year cycle.

@sje @neuralreckoning is there a way to tell the publishers to, well, sod off? The papers are mine!

@drchaos @neuralreckoning

lots of ways, depending on your energy levels

(a) refuse to review for those publishers

(b) discuss issue with local colleagues, particularly library colleagues.

(c) refuse to publish in those venues

@sje @neuralreckoning Too late for those. I'm out of academia, but would really not like to let those freeloading techbros benefit from my hard work.
@neuralreckoning What's worse is this comes on the heels of deals with both Google and Palantir, just fascist foreign nationals poking around in all our data with no real goal intended. Sovrinty's grand, innit?

@neuralreckoning

The world is so fucking cooked.

@neuralreckoning Selling England by the Pound…

What could possibly go wrong... Are you in the UK all familiar with the concept of a trojan horse?
I really hope EU government has a better idea on how to implement innovation in civil matters.
@Kaos it's not even a Trojan horse - we're going to also PAY them for it!
@neuralreckoning this is *so* stupid, I want to shout/cry.
@neuralreckoning love how completely ignorance this is of how education works, when they say it will give improvements in education. Classic.

@neuralreckoning wrote a short bit with an example not in my PhD (but it covers this bit) on why LLMs are particularly awful for neurodivergent students here. Dire ...

@neuralreckoning oh god 💀 this is going to go super great! Absolutely nothing could go wrong at all!
@neuralreckoning does anyone know when we’re supposed to see all the efficiency and growth that AI is supposed to unlock for us?
@neuralreckoning I guess pain also is a kind of stimulus
@neuralreckoning Also, if you thought that arguing with government bureaucrats was bad, wait until you have to argue with a chatbot.

"…innovating on a scale the British state cannot match"

I may have just facepalmed through my own skull.

@neuralreckoning Oh FFS. The Government is so desperate for a magic bullet to cure the country’s deep seated economic woes in the UK that they will trying anything, even from people selling snake oil. I half expect the Treasury to go all in on crypto.
@neuralreckoning really? Same company that says that without spying there is no innovation? The world will change very soon.
@neuralreckoning AI is the final proof that humanity would rather be destroyed than pass up "the latest thing". I despair.
