1. The direct financial bribes they get from fossil-fuel companies, and
2. The fact that any effective response requires strong governments and international cooperation, two things they abhor.
There are strong links between the oil industry and conservative religion. In the US many executives regularly donate to conservative christian causes like anti-abortion and oppressing women & LGBT people, and seem think believe that god gave humans explicit dominion over the earth.
I think many further believe that humans can't destroy the world because only god can do that.
I found this essay https://therevealer.org/the-rise-of-oilfield-evangelism/
And as an example of the religious belief: "Scott Pruitt, a former oil industry executive who served as director of the Environmental Protection Agency during Trump’s first term, has said that the Bible promotes drilling for coal, oil, and gas as part of humankind’s dominion over the Earth."
Another common excuse I hear from my mother is that if humans wreck the world that just means god will return to save us.
@petergleick You neglect #3, the most powerful reason:
3. Liberals are for recognizing #ClimateChange as real, therefore denying it exists is the politically correct move.
@petergleick Not sure I agree on the strong government part. They do like a strong government when it serves their interests.
If they would just stop subsidizing fossil fuels and liberalize energy markets (see Texas) that would be a weaker, less involved government and result in more climate action, or am I missing something?
