Don’t do this. Donuts, not volcanoes. The tree will root where the mulch is and when the mulch is gone it’ll cause shock. Or the freeze will get ‘em, or pests, or, or….

This is a major contributor to dead trees. Landscapers should know better. But these are the same guys who plant Bradford pears and winter creeper, sooo…

Have recently had to pay *a lot* to a tree company to come out and try to un-girdle some big trees, some we had planted and some of the street trees (that I don't want to lose.)

@User47 Hi, I'm very interested in understanding what you mean. I see myself planting a lot of trees in a few years and want to do it right. You say that the best way to spread mulch would be in a donut, or circle, around the tree?
