📍Repparfjord: When profit buries tradition
In northern Norway, the Sámi community is fighting to protect Repparfjord (Riehppovuotna)—a vital reindeer migration area and part of their ancestral lands. A copper mine, approved by the Norwegian government, now threatens not just the fjord’s fragile marine life, but also Sámi cultural survival.

🦌 For Sámi reindeer herders, the area is critical. Mining disrupts migration routes and fragments grazing land, making traditional herding nearly impossible. As Sámi youth activist Elle Márjá Eira said: “If the land disappears, so does the culture.” (Source: NRK)

🌊 The consequences go beyond the Sámi. Fjord ecosystems are interconnected: pollution here can travel with currents, impact fish stocks, and disturb Arctic marine life—already stressed by warming seas.
