ChronomystA cool thing about unemployment is:
The state says “You must post your résumé here or risk losing benefits.”
That public résumé becomes an unregulated fishing ground for every scammer and shady recruiter imaginable.
Vulnerable job seekers, especially those who are:
New immigrants
Elderly
Disabled
Desperate or newly unemployed
Struggling with English
get targeted first, because they’re least likely to catch the red flags
and the government is like "well, it’s your responsibility to be careful”
which is absurd, because they also insist you must be there to keep your benefits
the effect is people being manipulated into giving out personal info, bank info, copies of IDs, and getting scammed, re-victimized, and blamed
it is, frankly, an institutional failure that preys on the most precarious
