#AgaveSpike #FlowersOfMastodon two years after the first one, another of our giant agave plants is starting to send up a spike. Ends up like a 30ft tall asparagus with flowers on it…

@adrianco I recall reading some agave that indicates the end of life?

Pretty spectacular though! I love how they look!

@Taniwha Yes, this is the beginning of the end. About a year from now it will be brown and withered. We pulled the last one down after about 10months. It can’t grow new leaves and it sucks all the juice out of the existing leaves to support the flower head.
@adrianco hopefully you can get a new one in place once this one is done flowering!
@Taniwha We have so many of them and have propagated a lot more. It takes 15 years or so for them to get big enough to spike.
@adrianco didn't realize it took so long!
@Taniwha The base plant is about 6ft by 6ft… here’s a more recent picture of the latest #AgaveSpike. This was a week or so ago.
@Taniwha #AgaveSpike today’s status, I think the tip is about 15ft from the ground now.
@Taniwha #AgaveSpike update, about 18ft tall now. The base leaves ball is over 6ft.
@Taniwha #AgaveSpike we were away for a few weeks, it’s now at least 25ft high and the side shoots are forming. #SpikyMcSpikeFace2 (we had the first one two years ago) is still getting taller…
@adrianco is it still blooming!?!
