by age 30, you should have a group of friends that have strong opinions about restaurant menu typography
@selectric "That's bone. And the lettering is something called Silian Rail."
@selectric by age 30 and a half, you should have got rid of them
@selectric absolutely calling out Pizzeria 1926 on Dalry Road in Edinburgh here. worst typography I've ever seen. everything wraps differently, none of the prices line up with the things they're for, as much fucked-up kerning as you can imagine. some of the punctuation is even in different fonts. fucking amazing pizza though, would recommend for anyone needing dinner near Haymarket station
@qenya okay c'mon, it's *bad* but they *tried*. they have a consistent style going on. the colors work. they biffed the details but I've seen so many mom-and-pop hodgepodge menus with seven fonts and zero consistent style
@Gaelan @qenya Oh, I do not agree that the colors work; I distinctly remember staring at that menu for several minutes without actually taking in any of the options. The bright blue names did not help with that.
@randomcat @Gaelan I do love how you can tell their word processor "corrected" the apostrophe on 'nduja to an opening single quote. big "yeah, I see how this happened" vibes.

@qenya @Gaelan ... and below, under "PASTE", they have two instances of "nduja" with no apostrophe *or* single quote.

In a similar vein, under "DESSERT", "GELATO" says "Please ask for todayโ€™s selection", with a U+2019 RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK, while "DESSERT OF THE DAY" says "Please ask for today's selection", with a U+0027 APOSTROPHE.

@selectric I am so sorry to have inadvertently kicked this off in your replies ๐Ÿ˜…

@randomcat @Gaelan

@qenya @randomcat you will note that none of the messages before this one pinged selectric :p
@selectric At a slightly riper age I have formed strong opinions about friends that have strong opinions about restaurant menu typography. And it's kerning and em-dashes all the way down.
@selectric
I'm 40 years late but my pet hate of the year (so far) is restaurants that don't display prices properly. Eg, ยฃ12 as just 12 and pence as decimals, eg ยฃ12.60 as 12.6
At first I thought it was just tech illiterate staff using a spreadsheet without setting the number format to currency but it's widespread now.
@pthane you see this sometimes on this side of the pond too. or if the place is sufficiently fancy, they just don't bother with decimals at all, nor a number sign. just "Steak au poivre 37"
@selectric you could've stopped at group of friends
@selectric I hate to admit it, but mine tends to depend on the restaurant's price niveau. I can live with a cheap fastfood place having lots of typos in their menu, but I expect better from more expensive restaurants...
@selectric I guess I've succeeded in life, around 75% of my friends will comment on the typography before they comment on the content of... Anything
@selectric by age 40, you should have at least one friend brave enough to carry/wear reading glasses with them to read said menu.
@selectric hey, I don't care about the typography as long as the menu doesn't include ethnic slurs
