I don't know why people in software discourse seem to be so compelled by observational correlations and so uncurious about asking whether we can get stronger evidence about cause by isolating the relationship and seeing if an intervention to increase the supposed cause results in the expected change
"all the tech companies that are working well push code in this way" SO WHAT!! WHAT IS THE ACTUAL THEORY HERE! WHY DO WE KNOW THIS PRE-CHOSEN SPECIFIC VARIABLE IS RESPONSIBLE
This is setting aside the selection problems that occur in so much of this reporting -- recruiting hardly targets a range of possible practices so I doubt we could even ask some of the comparison questions we might want to ask

Some time ago I worked in a "data-driven company". And they would say - why are you so grumpy, you are mathematician, you should enjoy that we base our decisions on numbers! These must be right decisions then, because Math!!

While I was in a constant state of facepalm, because no-no-no, you can not blame numbers for your complete lack of understanding that you need a context, a model, and a theory to interpret them.

@bookwar @grimalkina This reminds me of the time when I had to explain the concept and process steps of operationalization into variables and validation and why it matters when using variables as a proxy for specific research questions to members of my doctoral dissertation committee...

I'll take cognitive biases for $200, Ken: "What is survivorship bias?"

@grimalkina If you feel like discussing it on the podcast, I’d be interested in your thoughts of the book Accelerate by Forsgren and Humble and the DORA program.

From a layperson perspective I appreciate it doesn’t only focus on tech but also included organizational culture based on Westrum.

I understand it’s a simplification to be able to measure in some way. Would be nice to hear your perspective to broaden my view.
