In Bloomberg CityLab, I wrote about A-pillars that are expanding driver blind zones and can easily conceal pedestrians.

@davidzipper I'm amazed every time I drive my 1975 pickup. I can see everything so much better than in my safe modern car
@ATLeagle @davidzipper Unsafe modern car. Safety is defined wrt its potential victims not operator.

@dalias @ATLeagle @davidzipper It's defined by both, but even if it weren't, a driver can be (and frequently is) a victim of actions by another driver.

That said, I have nearly gotten into a couple accidents thanks to these larger blind spots, and I would certainly like something to be done about them.

@garlickles @dalias @ATLeagle @davidzipper Sadly in the US, safety is only for the people in the vehicle in question. Otherwise most SUVs on the market would never get 5 star ratings. It's always (in the US) "how safe are you inside this vehicle?" and not yet "how safe are others outside this vehicle?".
