Researcher says tech could replace nearly all human labour within 20 years and societies urgently need to prepare

“Machines that can think are here, and their capabilities are expanding day by day with no end in sight. We don’t have that long to get ready for this. We know it’s going to be tumultuous.”

...but they're not, though? Machines can't think. They certainly aren't here now, and arguably can't ever be. Yes, the world of work is going to be tumultuous, but largely because far too many people have bought into the unfounded hype, and are now too deeply invested to extract themselves without losing both face and billions, and the upheaval while they figure out that the machines can't in fact do what they want them to do is going to be a nightmare for everyone.

...But please tell me if I'm missing something? Is there *any* evidence or research out there at all of machines actually "thinking", and if so how? Because this seems like the usual bunch of AI-grift-bullshit to me, and I'm alarmed to see The Guardian publish it uncritically

@mothninja don't fall in the trap there's 0 machine thinking, f*cking AI is just an autocompletion thing, nothing more
@foo__ yes exactly, I was just looking to see if there were any "advances" that I'd missed in my firmly-held "AI is a dangerous fairy tale" stance. Seems like there isn't, and it remains a really f'ing dangerous fairy tale that ever more people who should know better are falling into believing is true :/
