Robert Fuller talking about archeoastronomy of the Sydney basin: "What's up there, is also down here", Earth, sea, sky are all one country (very very similar to a local Dakota worldview I have heard: what happens above is reflected below, cool)

Talks about Elvina trail site, starting to learn what the drawings and lines mean - possibly linked to constellations, star cloud, emu in sky. Below Milky Way are animal engravings, the Earth!

Speaker makes an interesting point in an answer to audience question. The site they're studying hasn't had traditional owners for at least a couple hundred years. They could ask nearby groups about the engravings, but the knowledge wouldn't be the same, because it's a different place. Traditional knowledge is very land-specific. #IAUS399
This next talk is staring out in Māori! Māori system of celestial observation and implementation is not a horoscope: it's the scientific method applied for thousands of years.
Rather than just publishing papers (that they say no one reads), they create songs for each interview they do! Whoa
PhD project starting: How do Māori people read the stars to improve health?

I'm multitasking (evenings always require a lot of work) so not 100% focused on talks.

Regina Indah Syalaisha gave a talk about interviews she conducted on a small island in Indonesia to understand their cosmology (astronomy, traditional knowledge, calendars). Linked to growing seasons (linked to elevation), lots of variation within small island.

My kids were excited to see they have a chicken constellation that utilizes what I know as Orion's belt for the beak!

The next session is about to start, talking about Indigenous astronomy in Africa.

But I have family arriving very soon, and I'm realizing that I've been working almost non-stop for 12 hours (worked while eating all 3 meals today, gross), and I am so tired I haven't even gotten excited about them visiting yet!

For my own physical and mental health I am going for a quick walk. Going to take advantage of this remote conference having everything recorded so I can go back and watch later.

@sundogplanets This is all awesome! Especially fun is the insight into cultures other than Greco-Roman interpreting constellations; chickens! So cool!

However… I think I speak for everyone here when I ask a more important question: how are the goats?

@sundogplanets

Thank you for posting about this, it's really appreciated.

It's so interesting and a real eye opener 👍✨✨✨

Hope you get to spend some quality time with your visiting family 🙂

(and hope you manage to get some sleep too 😴)

@sundogplanets kia ora Professor Sam, assuming you’re talking about the Māori people of NZ, “Māori” needs a macron over the “a” :)

Fun fact, the Māori word for “macron” is “pōtae” which means “hat.”

@SimonCHulse Thanks for the reminder, will correct!
