I feel like people claiming AI is “democratizing” art actually mean “commodifying”, and also have a really bad idea of what art is. At least those I’m seeing talk seem to think “art” is just an aesthetically pleasing image or object.

And seem to miss that art is communication of a sort that means a complete novice’s napkin sketch is more valuable, better art than anything an AI could ever produce; at least until the day AI is so advanced it’s sapient (and that’s a long LONG way off).

Can a person use AI to make art? Of course! There are lots of questions about the ethics of doing that, but it’s certainly possible.

But anyone who can make art using an AI can already make art. AI didn’t make art more accessible to them; not even a little. In most cases, all it did was get in the way of them making art that matters to anyone. It undermined the whole exercise of creating art. The process is the point.
