The attempts by law enforcement & governments to subvert end-to-end encryption are ongoing. The European Commission is going to spend a year thinking about their new "Roadmap for law enforcement access to data", and they are (genuinely) asking for people to join their expert group to help. Here I urge you to join that group (also because I can't): https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/possible-end-to-end-to-end-come-help/
Possible End to End to End Encryption: Come Help - Bert Hubert's writings

tl;dr: The European Commission is honestly asking for experts to advise them on ways to institute “effective and lawful access to data for law enforcement”. If you are an expert, I urge you to apply to join this group. You have until September 1st. Do read on for more details! The never-ending battle where police and intelligence services demand more/total access to communications shows no sign of stopping, even in the face of mathematical and practical impossibilities.

@bert_hubert If any of these things cause backdoors or whatever it would be the first time ever I'm going to "break the law" I guess by using stuff without it.
@bert_hubert
So they're still chasing the "backdoor for the good guys"? Even if that were possible (which it isn't) and if they were "the good guys" (which they aren't), what happens when the nazis get to power? They're polling pretty high in a lot of EU countries, aren't they? The EC doesn't need crypto experts, they need common sense experts.
@bert_hubert I'll try to contact you during the week. Attending will be hard, but I can help gather, organize and write documentation on the associated topic

@bert_hubert

> ... since I am very vocal and like to publish noisy blog posts and do activism in the media. That is probably not compatible with being part of an expert group.

Why would that be incompatible with becoming part of an expert group? Companies and law enforcement quite openly send lobbyists to push their agendas, having publicly known opinions or being an activist doesn't even begin to compare with that.

@khobochka @bert_hubert My thoughts exactly, I wish he would participate.
@trollkatt @khobochka you are confusing politics with "expert group". You can't combine these two. However, I can still be very active and talk to the expert group.

@bert_hubert

@LDH_Fr some of you are available to join?

@bert_hubert

So they're calling for experts, and we see:

  • 5 bullet points on technical issues on how surveillance/access should work

followed by

  • 1 bullet point on "Justice and fundamental rights"
@BradRubenstein so? give up? not participate?

@bert_hubert

Au contraire, I was hoping the conclusion is "ignore the bullet points, and participate in order to realign the questions." (In practice, that probably means presenting oneself credibly as an expert in (1) to (4), and being prepared to argue for their irrelevance while there is such strident conflict regarding (5).

(I admit this is preaching to the choir)

@bert_hubert @rysiek FYI. Not sure if you saw already
@Shadow_of_clown @bert_hubert yeah, saw it. Not sure I am allowed to join either.

@bert_hubert @galaxis @jk Wondering if I should apply. Any thoughts?
@bert_hubert a fund to support costs should exist. It’s hard to go against a group of people that are paid to work in these kind of cases.
