What in the goddamn fuck

I wonder if Unity has realized that what they really just did was create a strong incentive to never create a Unity project again. Only open the old ones so you can close them out. No new ones needed

Unity have just released a controversial Unity Hub upgrade... You can no longer create non-Cloud projects! We discuss what exactly this means and how you can work around it. https://gamefromscratch.com/unity-now-forcing-cloud-projects/ #gamedev #indiedev #Unity3d

@mcc this seems in line with unity’s overall strategy for the last few years of attempting to discourage use of their product more generally
@mcc the tone may have been a little jokey here but I really cannot emphasize enough how seriously the vibe has shifted in industry. I perennially want to do more game dev but never really have the time, so I am always curious and asking around the industry to find out what I should learn. In 2019 there was broad consensus “you just gotta learn unity, no way around it”. Post pricing scandal, there’s 100% unanimity on “maybe godot, maybe unreal, under no circumstances even consider unity”
@glyph @mcc I'm seriously lucky I got a junior Unreal Dev job when I only had Unity experience. The lead dev doing the hiring trusted that I could learn as I worked. That was about 2 or 3 years before the pricing scandal. If I had stuck with Unity jobs I'd probably be in trouble.
@glyph @mcc Unity seems busy committing suicide. First the greedy pricing, now this.
@simon_brooke @glyph "You're not qutting fast enough!! Get out faster!!"
