Though the half-human sons of many Greek gods die in the Trojan War, Ares is the only male god who mourns the death of his progeny. That Ares cries when his son Ascalaphus is killed in battle reveals a rarely seen sensitive side of the bloodthirsty god of war.

@bevanthomas @AimeeMaroux I also seem to recall a notable scene in the #Iliad where #Ares flees, roaring in agony, when bested and wounded by the human warrior #Diomedes.
@bevanthomas He may be the only one whose mourning is shown in one of the poems that were not lost to time. However, Apollo avenges the death of his son Asclepios even if he has to face the anger of his own father Zeus, and Poseidon claims justice for the blinding of his son Polyphemes by Ulysses. This shows that the gods care deeply about their progeny, though I don't know whether their mourning is described in detail in ancient texts.
