"A study by Cornell University estimates that, globally, AI could use up to 6.6bn cubic metres of water by 2027, the equivalent of nearly two-thirds of England’s annual consumption as recorded by the government."

"Overall, England’s public water supply could be 5bn litres a day short by 2055, and a further 1bn litres a day short for uses such as farming, power generation and sustaining new technologies."

AI makes water shortages harder to predict, says UK Environment Agency - Global Government Forum

Advancements in artificial intelligence have created a blind spot for the UK government over future water shortages in England, the Environment Agency has said.

@gerrymcgovern @VioletPixel
It’s very easily solved. We pass a law saying they can only use sea water.

Everything else is their problem. It might even generate drinking water.

@gerrymcgovern I added some concrete examples, to move the problem from the abstract realm of "we're short on water" to what that actually means for your own personal every-day life.

In 30 years, people in Britain can no longer - take a shower after a sweaty workout, having sex or just a hot summer day (of which there will be plenty) - flush their toilet after taking a piss/shit, having to live with the stink of urin; imagine the stink of a public toilet, just in your own bathroom, every day - eat vegetables - have a garden or lawn There just won't be enough water for any of that. All because of "AI". #genai #llm #chatgpt #capitalism #WaterShortage https://mastodon.green/@gerrymcgovern/114783392100794507
