“The NBA couldn’t wash its hands of the WNBA quickly enough during the 2000s, and now it’s rushing to get back in. But that doesn’t mean this rate of expansion is the right move for the league or that the W can afford to dilute its talent and likely diminish its quality just as all eyes are on it….” 🏀 ⛹🏽‍♀️ #WNBA #WNBAMastodon #WNBAExpansion

Rapid rate of WNBA expansion is exciting … but not best move for the league

The pace and scale of W expansion robs it of its unique character and will bring a host of issues.

There are a few good points made here, but be clear that I consider this a DOOMER take. 🏀 ⛹🏽‍♀️
@BrooklynBuckets Hate this take on every level. There is all kinds of talent out there (Aari McDonald didn't make an opening day roster for crying out loud). Article also fails to mention a good bit of reason for this expansion has to be to prevent any ideas of a rival league forming. The league won't ever admit that, but ...
@gogmagog Agreed. I do hope they slow down on the expansion next, though, and shift to roster expansion and addressing improvement of the referee situation. #WNBA

@BrooklynBuckets I wonder if the league is going to go to three divisions after this:

East - New York, Philly, Connecticut (Boston eventually), Washington, Atlanta, Toronto

Midwest - Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana, Chicago, Minnesota and Dallas

West - Las Vegas, Phoenix, LA, Golden State, Portland and Seattle

@BrooklynBuckets Easy to schedule a 44 game season. Four games against divisional opponents (20 games) plus two games against everybody else (24).
@gogmagog That would be cool. I’d like them to expand to two more cities (Houston & Boston) (would that be an even number?), then slow down on that front for a while and focus on other areas of league growth and improvement—including realignment 🏀 ⛹🏽‍♀️ #WNBA #WNBAMastodon #WNBAExpansion
@gogmagog Playoffs top two teams from each division?
@BrooklynBuckets Could also have two wildcards, if you wanted eight playoff teams, which I think they would.
@gogmagog Was just going to follow up with that suggestion. Makes sense. That would work well.
