Steam Deck / Gaming News #22
Will [FBC: Firebreak] have the staying power for the long-run?
Maybe not! But that’s (probably) okay! It’s not a live service. (It doesn’t have LAN either, which is a personal gripe of mine, but they don’t seem to intend for you to play this one for very long.) Most games don’t last very long in the public consciousness, no matter how good they are. I just played some Hypercharged: Unboxed with a friend of mine, because there haven’t been much of any deathmatch shooters in years, and it was just what the doctor ordered. It’s been so long since the FPS genre was about this that Perfect Dark (the person on Lemmy) might not even remember an era where shooters were often very similar to Perfect Dark (the video game), and that sucks.
Speaking of things that suck, I hope your health situation improves. Best of luck. We’ll be here when you get back.
Do you have any more information on those manuals in terms of how they made them? (Or a link to where I could read the info) Things like printing process, materials used etc. I work in print so that kind of interests me and from the photos they look of an OK quality so I was just curious.
All the best with your health, I enjoy reading through your posts even if I am not commenting every time but health is always more important so I hope things take a positive turn for you!
You can find their LinkTree here, which hopefully helps you get in contact with them?!
I’m unsure of materials or processes, since it’s not something I’ve gone into detail on (instead I just love the look of them!), though doing a search I did see a couple of Nintendo Switch-centric sites have done ‘articles’ on their work too, so it’s kinda known in the space. I do hope this helps!
If they’re on a platform you are, ask them! They seem super approachable and really proud (rightly so!) of their work, so I’ve little doubt they’d enjoy chatting about the technical details of their efforts!
You’re welcome :)
Sadly I don’t use any of those platforms and with a cursory view their website and etsy page don’t cover the actual materials and methods used to produce them (which is a bit weird for a passion project). I may have missed it though and will look properly once I’m not working.
Have a good day!
Send them a message!
I’ve no doubts they’d love to talk details!!!
I have a lifelong friend with Addison’s and it always seemed horrible to have to constantly manage and worry about. And he was fortunate enough to not also have Diabetes!
I adore your posts and will miss them dearly, but please take care of yourself and focus on your health. Don’t push yourself, if I understand right extra stress is particularly bad.
Much love ♥️
Oh that’s so interesting!
If they’d like someone to chat to, I’m on Matrix most days (along with Revolt) and more than happy to be an ear if they need! Thanks for leaving a comment, I always appreciate you dropping by :)
I’ve heard this before. Quite a long time back someone contacted the dev of Boost who fixed it at the time with an update but…since then I suppose its broken again?
Its only Boost that seems to have this issue, I’m sorry. Using the browser though there’s no slow-down, if that helps?
Wish i could get a hold on these manuals to switch games but after looking some it seem quite hard. Would love to print for my own use and for something to my child to look at just like I did when I were younger. Oh well.
Sad to hear about the condition and I hope you get well. Why do these things happen to good people who make a change in the world?
thank you for your posts, it’s always a great time to read them!
i love that you share cool fan projects too! it’s inspiring me to make a physical collection for my GOG games, including actual DVDs with the games installers on them. most of the physical collection projects i see seem to only do the box, but i want to go all in!
take care 🧡
Urgh, every sale season I see people that don’t know any better post sales for Disco Elysium and I’m obligated to encourage people to pirate it instead

Wishing the best for your health! You’re an absolute treasure of the fediverse! ❤️
First of all:
I hope your health improves. While I tend to not read the entirety of your writeups, I always skim them and then read the details on topics that are interesting. It would be a shame to not find your posts on lemmy anymore, as I prefer the interaction over a microblogging service like mastodon.
as for your question
…have you picked up any games? What have you bought,
I have picked up:
Crash Bandicoot is at an all-time-low price, if you haven’t picked it up in a humblebundle years ago, now might be your chance.
Another game I can recommend is “Beyond: Two Souls”, which is available for 1,99€ on Steam. It’s a great story driven game, with multiple endings and great acting. You might also want to get “Detroit: Become Human”, a very similar title in terms of gameplay.
Wish you the best with your health! You are super cool for writing these, no matter how often.
As for what I bought:
Glitch Busters The Big Con Copy Kitty Inner Tao Alephant IFO Flinthook Mercenary Kings Heck Deck One Night Stand Snake Farm Xpand Rally Kerbal Space Program Monster Train 2! Glass Masquerade 2 & 3 Pilgrims Happy Game Kine Schedule I RoboCop A Webbing Journey Miasmata The Halo Spartan Bundle Briquid Krystals Clash: Artifacts of Chaos (love me some chilean games) Little Nightmares 2 Tokyo Xtreme Racer Windjammers 2 Gravity Ace Mon Bazou Zeepkist Vibrant Venture Arco Natural Selection 2 Space Engineers 1 & 2 White Knuckle Bloons TD5 Flight Sim X My Summer Car Red Faction Armageddon Andddd Automobilista 2
I’m a game dev so I buy a lot of games for research and also for fun hehe
I ended up making a rather large amount of purchases from GOG: the entire catalog for Prince of Persia, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Vaporum, Hotline Miami 2, and Men of War: Assault Squad.
I hope you feel better soon Perfect Dark!
Get well soon, your posts are much appreciated.
Thanks for the reminder to pick up Sable. I had already bought it on GOG when it came out and played on another type of handheld, the GPD Win Max and didn’t have any performance issues really. I loved the movement and exploration and obviously the visuals. To me it had the great feeling movement of BOTW, without the bad combat. Highly recommended.
Speaking of Playnite, that’s what I was using when I had the GPD Win Max as my game library manager and I really miss it. Now that I basically only play on Steam Deck, I miss its UI. I love the simplicity of remapping controls with the Steam Deck and it’s a much more comfortable device, but Steam is a worse client. I’m really looking forward to the Linux release so then I can use it on my laptop too.
On the topic of Steam Deck, how reliably do the GOG achievements and cloud saves work with Heroic Launcher? I’ve been using Non-Steam game launcher for Non-Steam games, but it doesn’t always add the game reliably to Steam so I’m stuck doing it manually.
Finally, I’ve just started buying games I already own and love on different store fronts, that way I give more money to developers I like and not feel like I’m missing out on the sale while at the same time not having to feel bad for buying new games I don’t have time to play. That said, I bought third copies of Tux and Fanny and Sumatra: The Fate of Yandi on GOG and picked up the Case & Consequence Collection Bundle on Humble Bundle for BROK the Investigator and Heavy Rain

I’ve had some bad blood with the ‘developer’ of NSL in the past. But that’s all ancient history. My main issue with NSL (still to this day) is that it has everything installed under one prefix. This is just insane to me, if one thing goes wrong…everything disappears. But, of course it’s all personal choice and lots of people enjoyed using it before NSL got kicked off Decky Loader, publicly denounced by Kyle (developer of Bazzite) added religious scripture to his work, generally proved themselves to be a shitty person.
Anyway! On to Heroic:
Achievements:
GOG achievements work flawlessly. My good friend imLinguin is in charge of the GOG integration on Heroic, and his work with Comet (how the achievements are logged) is amazing! There’s no on-screen pop up for the achievement, but it is logged on your profile on GOG’s site, as is your playtime.
Adding the game to Steam:
Its in the settings - automatically add the game to Steam, and it’ll do it for you! As well as populate the game with all the required artwork for the title (capsule, capsule wide, logo etc). It does require a restart however to add it to your Steam game library - under non Steam games tab!
Cloud Saves:
They’ve not failed me yet, but the team and imLinguin do warn that it is not finalized yet. It’s ‘experimental’ - that being said, it’s perfect for me. It ‘just works’. Once you set it in the game’s settings you can double-checl (if you like) on the GOG site: www.gog.com/account/cloud-saves/page/1 - you’ll see it listed once it is done and you know you’re safe!
^ Here’s an example of the last game I played via Heroic - TOEM, and the saves were uploaded and are sitting there nicely :)
Lastly if you’re super curious, my friend Gardiner has a server on Revolt where quite a few dev friends of mine, including imLinguin drop by now and then to share their news and work and chat. You could ask him in the server if you’ve any questions! Here’s the link to the Revolt server, if you’re wanting to see!
Do!
And feel free to send me a message, either on Revolt or Matrix - I’m typically online most of the time anyway :)
No, they’re not on by default! It’s no error, just making it a choice rather than choosing for you.
I’m not surprised by NSL showing errors, being that it was coded with GPT.
Go to the installed game’s settings and then turn on cloud saves. It’ll have a warning telling you it’s basically in beta, but again - it’s worked flawlessly for me!
I just built my first computer since 2001 with Endeavour as OS, and bought Cyberpunk and Robocop from GOG.
Also just recently played through Drova and that’s the most fun I’ve had in a game recently. Not quite as good as Gothic 2, but well worth playing.
I finally caved and bought Cyberpunk from GOG, to pay on my steam deck.
Might have been better off buying the steam version (same price, I wanted to support the devs and GOG), as I find it kind of hard to get running on my deck.
Installed it with Lutris, Installer downloaded 3 hours and then never finished.
And then I noticed that phantom Liberty is a dlc and not installed by default in the ultimate edition…
Just found this post coming from Bluesky. In a sea of AI-written dreck you are a god-send. I really appreciate that you put a ton of work into the article. I will now go read your other articles. :)
Please take care of yourself and get the medical support you need. I still look forward to seeing your contributions in the future.
You must be using Boost?
For some reason that app struggles with too many images / GIFs
Once long back the dev was made aware of that issue and had a fix, but…I suppose its broken again for this?
You can use any other app, or just the browser if that helps? Sorry to hear its still a problem
With a little delay (sorry, life kept me busy enough so I couldn’t read this before), I just finished reading. I gotta say this was a rollercoaster.
I love the news parts, as always, since you manage to get a whole week of news compressed in a single article (and without the clickbait ads) that feels fresh and nice to read.
But knowing the kind of ordeal you are dealing with is heartbreaking. First and foremost, your health comes first. If you need to take a pause from this, you don’t have to apologize, it’s the right thing to do so go ahead and do it. I’m really sorry to hear about all you are going through, I hope you get to feel better soon!! Best wishes from an user who is clearly human!
