Zohran Mamdani has a lot of great ideas for programs that will make NYC livable and affordable for everyone.

He should add a free N95 mask program to that list.

N95 masks improve public health by protecting people from airborne viruses and wildfire smoke.

Providing them for free increases their use and decreases stigma.

Zohran includes the importance of guarding against shortages of PPE in his platform. One of the best ways to do that is by implementing a year-round free N95 mask program, which will ensure we have the necessary infrastructure in place well before any new public health emergencies arise.

N95 masks are also important for protecting people from the health impacts of climate change.

A year-round free N95 program is key because people need to have masks before the city is engulfed in wildfire smoke & it’s harmful to go outside.

It’s too late if you wait until air quality has dropped.

We should remember that important public health practices that are seen as normal today like the use of condoms were once controversial. One of the most important policies for turning the tide and decreasing stigma was providing condoms for free. We should do the same with N95 masks.

Shout out to mask blocs who have been doing amazing work distributing free N95 masks on little resources. Just imagine what could be achieved if one of the biggest cities in the world put resources behind getting free N95 masks to the people!

@luckytran at least we know he's not going to ban masks from the subways. And Hochul won't try while he's mayor. Right now she's even pretending to like him. So that's a relief.

I get the feeling that if New Yorkers proposed a free N95 program, he'd be all over it, 100%. He seems like the sort of guy. And he'll get to compare its costs to Cuomo's legal fees, always a fun thing to trot out.

@theogrin we have been working on this for years and there’s actually a lot of support for a free mask program in the city council. Hopefully having Zohran as mayor will finally get this over the line!
