At this point we are at a legitimate point where we need to reduce our numbers, it’s going to be ugly, because we don’t have coherence in unity and common vision to approach it intelligently, as in just have less kids. It’s gonna be dog eat dog. If there ever is coherence and common vision, the last person I want to enable such decisions is a glutton.
I saw an exposition in a museum as a teen. It tracked the number of babies being born, and beeped for each. This really had an impact on me, I remember it so well.
Someone said there had been talks about 'The People Bomb' and since this was before my time, I hadn't heard of it.
At some point things will collapse.

@pascaline @AJ_andrew69 Agreed, not as we are. If a world plague reduced numbers by 70%, or even Thanos got his snap of the fingers (Marvel Ref), we might stand a chance.
We function as bacteria, expanding, poisoning ourselves until we collapse from our own weight having devoured our surroundings. Our intelligence is not at a high enough level, or not the right kind of intelligence for billions, we are too selfish to allow for, or reduce these numbers in a humain way.

I think 'The Rich' are a clever, albeit privileged section of society: they will probably ride this out and watch the collapse, and rise as a glorious new kind. It's too bad richness often corrupts and creates assholes.
Selfishness, power hunger, the love of money, and the ever 'looking up to' the 'Haves', who so many consider shiny beacons of how they want to become, create a hole that cannot be filled.

But I think they must have escape ropes. We could use them to hang them, of course.
There really are wonderful rich people though who ask to please be taxed more, and I remember when they got together and wrote a letter to achieve this. One of them was Abigail Disney.
Maybe humanity should behave more like a bog. Collapsing, yes, but gaining from that to create an even better space that allows more life to thrive.

Fuck all effect really, 50 years and it’s back up again. Humanity having less children is the sanest way to reach a sustainable future but

that can only happen when govts around the world provide good quality universal support for the elderly otherwise poor people will continue to have children in the expectation that they will look after them in their old age.

@ginger_tosser At this point I have no expectations of humanity’s ability to solve this problem. Nothing will change, significant enough to make a difference, until we are forced to change through calamity. Otherwise, the individual piles of gold maintain priority. 😐

No worries! 🙂 Thanos is a Marvel Universe character who thinks balance in the universe would be regained by non-prejudicially removing half of the intelligent life, which he would accomplish in a manner I won’t describe nor comment on the logic behind this idea…😊

@ginger_tosser @pascaline @AJ_andrew69 I always thought the idea was a crude one, especially the indiscriminate part. But in the scenario of over population , it would provide breathing space with the caveat that the survivors would actually be motivated to change their ways, which for humans would not be certain by any means. 🤔
