Amazon bought Goodreads and turned it into a dumpster fire where "reviewers" trash books even before galleys and review copies are sent out. https://www.thebookseller.com/news/authors-hit-by-bad-reviews-on-goodreads-before-review-copies-are-even-circulated

It's a shame, because Goodreads was a valuable service for authors and readers back when...

Authors hit by bad reviews on Goodreads before review copies are even circulated

Authors are being hit by negative reviews on Goodreads before review copies are even circulated, with the review site allegedly failing to remove reviews.

@dangillmor There is a Fediverse alternative to Goodreads called #BookWyrm. Website is https://joinbookwyrm.com/ and their Mastodon account for updates is @bookwyrm
Join Bookwyrm

BookWyrm is a decentralized social network for tracking your reading, talking about books, writing reviews, and discovering what to read next.

@alan @dangillmor @bookwyrm I have some hopes for it, but it's super empty.
@mbybee @alan @dangillmor @bookwyrm I'm on the @bookrastinating instance. It's nice and chill, not empty. But yeah, not at the same level as GR but also without the toxicity. Importing one's GR library is super easy.
@socprof what's your handle on #bookwyrm? I tried bookrastinating.com/user/SocPr… and found nothing.

Do you have a huge book backlog? Do you avoid doing things just to read? Do you read just to avoid doing things? Bookrastinating is here for you.

@socprof @alan @dangillmor @bookwyrm @bookrastinating The review import and the tech are spot on.
@alan @dangillmor @bookwyrm I like bookwyrm, I mostly use it to catalog my reads, but I have found some good recommendations on there too.

@alan

Bookwyrm is not a good fit for the fediverse, because it isn't free and open source software. We don't need that kind of pollution in the fediverse.

How about advocating for NeoDB instead, which is also federated but also allows cataloging of all media types?
