The #linguistics of #clickbait.

Together with Martin Luginbühl I dived into the linguistic strategies used to entice visitors of news sites to click on links to articles. At #IPrA2025 we will present our findings based on a corpus study of more than 1.2 mio German newspaper articles.

My contibution focusses on the last sentences of article leads. The "es gibt" construction is often used here. For more, visit our presentation on June 26!

Sounds like one could build a clickbait blocker if it's so predictable.

@allo Unfortunately it is not as predictable as we would wish. The most frequent constructions cover only around 3% of all lead texts.

But of course, not all articles make it to the front page which might be a reason why not too much energy goes into generating fancy leads.
