The UK seems to have settled on a version of free speech where it's important to be shocked and offended at university, but not permitted to shock or offend at a music festival
@Natasha_Jay UK govts and Councils (of all parties) would ban festivals (or at least restrict them further) if they could - I was a raver in the 90s/00s and the backlash is horrendous, particularly in places like Essex which were hubs of hedonism - much of the entire electronic music scene has been purged from there, and even the TOWIE style nightlife is now under threat as its no longer considered desirable or profitable (unlike Universities which are expected to prepare youth for corporate life)

@Natasha_Jay

It is also asymmetric at uni. Protest, esp student protest, is easily banned as "intimidation".

@Natasha_Jay it's more that we must allow people to be shocked and offended by right wing, colonialist and genocide supporters, but must protect people from being shocked by people suggesting that killing people both directly and through starvation should be prevented.

@Natasha_Jay

the very fundamental aesthetic of punk

@Natasha_Jay Is this prompted by any specific news? Sorry if I missed something.
