So, the neighbor schooled me a bit today, thought I might share. The longitudinal curl that is starting to show in the corn leaves means they are heat stressed, and he expects it to get much worse over the next few days.

My sad mystery tomato is displaying the same symptoms, so on a whim, I jammed my finger in the dirt in the pot,and it was alarmingly warm. Tbf, it's a black pot sitting in a sunny spot. My new theory is the poor thing doesn't have enough dirt to dissipate the heat, and is slowly cooking. It'll be in the ground soon, but this is a new problem. I've always had good luck growing tomatoes in pots. Might be time for a big shade cloth. Thoughts?

@chrisnelsonsdog Found some info that may be of use to you. They mention air circulation will help.

Heat Stress and Tomatoes

As we experience more extreme high air temperatures (above 90˚F in our area), heat stress of tomatoes is more common.

@JamesNielsen thank you sir! That answered a few of my questions
@JamesNielsen after applying a little wine assisted thought to this, the neighbor recently changed the spacing of his corn from thirty inches between rows to fifteen, doubling the number of plants. Certainly reducing airflow among them. I would imagine that is a factor.
@chrisnelsonsdog That would surely affect his airflow. The photo of your tomato plant being in a corner made me think about airflow as mentioned in the article. Good luck with the heat wave, and stay hydrated!
