The Myth of AGI | TechPolicy.Press

Alex Hanna and Emily M. Bender write that claims of "Artificial General Intelligence" are a cover for abandoning the current social contract.

Tech Policy Press
@baldur a progression from AI to AGI to AGSI, each time becoming more vague with inflated promise, guys in ties, and cash flow. It’s like a chain of distortion pedals, each one increasing the noise and losing the musical note it started at.
"AGI is a term that famously lacks a precise meaning, and certainly does not refer to any particular imminent technology. (...) Embodying the mysticism around the term, Ilya Sustkever, the former Chief AI Scientist at OpenAI, would lead chants of “Feel the AGI!” around the office. In a leaked agreement, Microsoft and OpenAI crafted a much more well-defined metric: whether such a system could generate $100 billion in profit."

@baldur is this how the American empire dies, burning all their resources, and then some, trying to build their religious idol.

It reminds me of the fall of the Incas by the greedy Spanish. Of course this time the greed comes from within. The human sacrifices remain though, albeit less overt.
