Sando is upset again because Spiegel gets to eat kibble but he can't. I am giving you so many options of wet food ffs cat eat something.

He's been really cuddly today but maybe it's because he hopes I'll feed him kibble.

Note this isn't particularly tasty kibble. It's gastro stuff for Spiegel's health issues. I think he's just wanting it on principle

Sando convinced Spiegel to give him a wash, which Spiegel did until he sniffed and remembered that Sando was a pod person and he stopped.
Now I'm starting to worry. Sando won't seem to eat anything but the squeeze tube treats, and he's weak enough that he can't fight me if I grab him. Calling the vet for suggestions
I'm glad I kept the coffee grinder, I've ground down some kibble for him under the vet tech's suggestion (who thought I could just "crush" the kibble, lol no). Sando had a bit, but not that much.

The vet has stated that if I can’t get Sando eating again then I am to give up and let him have the full-sized kibble. So I’ll see how he is over the next day.

My previous cat really was on easy mode compared to the current shitheads.

I guess Sando can’t be doing that badly given he followed Spiegel out into the hallway when I was coming home from a milk run.

Sando walked towards the elevators, stopped and made a loud meow. Yeah, I’m sure my neighbours appreciated hearing that at 11 pm.

I forgot to update: I did end up giving Sando full-sized kibble on Sunday night, because nothing was working, and he couldn’t just live on squeeze-tube treats. He immediately inhaled the kibble and his weight’s coming back up.

He was supposed to be on soft foods for 10 days but we only lasted 5. May need to bring him back to the vet to check how his mouth is healing.

I usually say Spiegel is the real shithead of the two, but in this way it’s Sando. Stubborn bastard.

@giflian I'm so glad he's eating! Cats can be so finicky!
@giflian I had one cat who, near the end of his life, suddenly decided he wasn't going to eat any cat food. We kept him going on a diet of canned fish. You do what you have to, but it is always tough when they are being picky. Hugs, and I hope you can find what gets him eating again.
@commonst Yeah, I dealt with that with my last cat’s final year. This certainly isn’t a dire situation, Sando is 3.5 years old and otherwise healthy. I’m just trying to keep it that way.
@giflian oh wow, yeah. I hope he stays healthy and has a long amd happy life.
@giflian I finally got our newly fussy/weight losing cat to eat half a can by … spooning it onto floor. His brother looked on it utter shock.
@giflian Have you tried mixing the ground kibble with the tube treat?
Kitty not eating is so stressful. As if a vet visit and dental surgery isn’t bad enough 😝
The first 4 days after surgery were the most stressful for Ava and I but she did come around eventually. Hoping Sando snaps out of it sooner rather than later.

@stephaniepixie There’s an idea.

Just tried that. Sando didn’t eat very much of it, but he did eat it as soon as I put it in front of him, so I probably need to just put a small dish of this in front of him every hour or so to see if he eventually remembers the concept of food.

My previous cat had renal failure and stopped eating, and I thought she was dying but I eventually got her eating again and she lived another year and a few months (on special food, subq fluids, and medications). The first few weeks of her barely eating anything was really rough, and for a few months I had a nest camera pointed at her food dish so I could check if she’d eaten while I was out.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

@giflian Sometimes I’m too emotionally involved to think of all the possible solutions so even what might seem simple can be something I miss. I hope something works for you.

I’ve found that giving Ava smaller and more frequent meals has helped her to finish her food.
Now my issue is getting her to drink water again. She hasn’t touched her water fountain or water dish since the dental surgery. But she does lap up the water I mix into her canned food.
She never hesitated to drink water in the entire 3+ years I’ve known her. Not sure if I’ll need to keep doing this forever more.
I read that it can take a month for their mouth to fully heal from dental surgery. Might be a bit rough for a little while.

Sending you and kitty all the best thoughts

@stephaniepixie Hmm, it does occur to me, my cats are used to grazing; the only time they eat something right in front of me is with treats. I just haven’t needed to worry about their food intake, other than watching Spig for food reactions. So I should probably not worry about the small amounts.

Compared to Spiegel and my previous cat, Sando’s been quite healthy, and though the vet has said I should limit his food to get his weight down, I wasn’t convinced this was necessary since he was so fit and muscular.

I’m sorry you’re also dealing with this. Are we trauma bonding?

@giflian Your last question 🤣 maybe?

The first few days after Ava’s surgery were the most stressed I’ve felt regarding her wellbeing so I can viscerally feel what it must be like for you.

@stephaniepixie Well, it made me feel a bit better reading about your struggles (in a commiseration way, not schadenfreude).

It’s possible some of Sando’s behaviour is psychological, too.

I did just hear him eat some more of the ground kibble, unprompted. Sweet

@giflian I have no doubt a lot (maybe most) of their reaction is psychological. Vet kept telling me the medicine would likely increase Ava’s appetite and it did no such thing.
I don’t know if Sando got an injection that made his pupils dilate but it lasted 3 days for Ava and she didn’t sleep well or could properly relax in that time. I’m sure that affects their sense of comfort and therefore appetite.
The only way Ava would eat the first few days was if I left a bowl of food under the bed and left her alone. My moody baby.

I’m glad it helps a bit to commiserate together. That’s why I want to share my experience.

@stephaniepixie Hmm, they didn’t tell me anything about pupil dilation, but he was pretty stoned.

He had the opposite reaction to the sedative when he got fixed in 2022; I was told I was taking home a groggy kitten and instead he was the energizer bunny in a cone of shame.

He does still drool if I give him chest scritches so I assume he’s not dehydrated, or not by much.

Cats are stupid, why did I get any

@giflian we've got our finger and paws crossed for you.
@giflian we fed Bucky dry kibble, but we soften it first with warm water. Maybe doing that will get him to eat.
@somcak I've already been doing that. It takes hours for the kibble to get mushy from the water, and then neither cat touches it.

@giflian ugh. I didn't realize cat food is that dense. The dog food softens right up without getting too mushy.

Dang cat! This is gonna be a challenge to get him to eat!!

@somcak this kibble is particularly solid, as the vets had suggested soaking in warm water for a few minutes as well, and I hadn't had trouble with my previous cat's kibble (which was a different gastric food).

It doesn't seem to matter much, though. Neither cat is touching these attempts.

Spiegel seems to be up in weight the last few days, I guess from eating the wet foods on Sando's behalf. Sighhhhhhhh
