man nobody just makes a normal fucking keyboard any more huh

there are three types of keyboard on the market today:

  • boutique mechanical keyboards. these are very pretty and cost $300 despite only being 60% of a keyboard
  • literal trash. awful squishy membrane keyboards that could well have been fished out of the dumpster at an office that just migrated off windows vista, after IT has picked through it for anything salvageable
  • suspiciously cheap mechanical keyboards that look like axe body spray and 5 gum had a baby. you probably can't turn the RGB lighting off and if you want to change it at all you KNOW you're downloading a 1GB+ electron app that only runs on windows
  • you actually can find fairly normal "100%" full-height mechanical keyboards for a reasonable-ish amount of money, but they all have something... off about them. maybe they're only available in mac layout. maybe the screen printed keycaps use a very strange font. maybe it requires a USB-C cable with a proprietary overmoulding.
anyway my dad is struggling with a PC from like 2012 that couldn't run stably when it was new, and he hates spending money or having money spent on him, so i grabbed a refurbished optiplex for relatively cheap. trouble is, it doesn't have a PS/2 port so it won't accommodate his keyboard. i can hook him up with a cheap USB keyboard fairly easily but i figured i'd look for something halfway decent while i'm at it
like seriously what is with all the $30 mechanical keyboards that look like a monster energy shitpost
@sjolsen just get him a PS2-USB adapter if his keyboard is tolerable. also idfk what the deal is. there's some pretty good options out there but you have to sort through so much garbage. I had to spend like $200 just to get a barebones 100% layout because 100% layouts have died off so badly
