The former 1953 Jean-Paoli Clinic in Arles now offers temporary housing for students and seasonal workers, giving an old structure a new life rooted in care, circularity, and bioregional materials. Much of what was already there was preserved in the transformation: ceramic sinks, terrazzo floors, and vintage lamps. A new wooden pavilion sits where a 1970s extension once stood, opening the building up to its garden. Thirty-nine rooms, shared spaces, and a small apartment introduce new rhythms to the space. One of the project's most ambitious elements was insulating the entire building envelope with locally sourced Camargue rice straw. This rarely used technique, especially on this scale, created an opportunity to establish a regional supply chain. Combined with hot-mix lime mortar, the system supports breathability, moisture regulation, and long-term durability without synthetic foams or plastics. Materials were chosen based on what the region offers, including limestone from the Fontvieille quarry, earth blocks made from quarry waste, and timber species such as oak, cypress, and Aleppo pine. PAOLI continues the research started with LOT8, strengthening our commitment to bioregional and regenerative construction. We are honored that the project received the Fibois award for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and that it has been nominated for the national award.
