Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal, sold fighter jets and tanks, lowered military production to near-zero, went neutral, and signed peace deals with everyone.

The result? It got invaded, attacked, bombed, left to fight alone. Children are being stolen, raped, killed.

So Eisenhower was right and wrong. While there are tyrants out there, freedom must be armed better.

@joaocosta @rbreich What do you mean "freedom"? Western imperialism? No country fights for freedom, each one fights for its favourite brand of oppression.

On Freedom

A brilliant exploration of freedom โ€“ what it is, how itโ€™s been misunderstood, and why itโ€™s our only chance for survival โ€“ by the acclaimed, bestselling author of On Tyranny. Freedom is the great Western commitment, but we have lost sight of what it means โ€“ and this is leading us into crisis. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power: we think weโ€™re free if we can do and say as we please, and protect ourselves from government interference. But true freedom isnโ€™t so much freedom from, as freedom to โ€“ the freedom to thrive, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible. Drawing on the work of philosophers and political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers and his own experiences, Snyder identifies the practices and attitudes โ€“ the habits of mind โ€“ that will allow us to design a government in which we and future generations can flourish. We come to appreciate the importance of traditions but also the role of institutions. Intimate yet ambitious, this book helps forge a new consensus rooted in a politics of abundance, generosity and grace. Snyderโ€™s book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom; On Freedom helps us see exactly what weโ€™re fighting for. It is a thrilling intellectual journey and a tour de force of political philosophy.

@joaocosta @rbreich If this book didn't give you the means to answer my questions, why should I read it? How about you start answering something?

@yqn

By "freedom" I mean what everyone else does. Check the dictionary if you are unsure. Or read the book if you can cope with more.

Western imperialism? โ€” No, a peaceful country being invaded by an empire because it was free and disarmed.

No country fights for freedom โ€” Citizens do fight for their freedom. History is full of examples. Learn them.

each one fights for its favourite brand of oppression โ€” How do you know? Have you asked them or want to impose your ideology on others?
