First *“My AI Skeptic Friends Are All Nuts”*

Ptacek argues that modern LLMs—especially in software development—are far more capable than skeptics give them credit for. He highlights how developers use them as agents, not just code autocomplete tools, making them genuinely useful. While he respects skepticism in areas like art or writing, he urges critics to engage with how the tech is actually being used today rather than relying on outdated assumptions.

...The author mocks the breathless enthusiasm that implies **every** programmer must use AI or be seen as obsolete—calling it a kind of “cosmic wind” sweeping everyone along without critical thought.

They argue this pressure ignores real concerns about whether AI tools actually improve outcomes or just add complexity and hype. It’s not just about whether the tools work—it’s about the **social and professional coercion** to use them regardless of context or benefit.

It sounds to me like Ptacek thought Ai was a fad 6 months ago and now noticed something changed.

Whatever it's worth, I've spent 8 years dealing with ai philosophically through testing, development and artistic research. I know the facade and lies of Ai well.

Also, I really dont have anything nice to say about Ptacek. His HN behavior is part of what makes HN toxic. But, I agree after 6 month things changed slightly. "Vibe coding" is actual lexicon now.
