The @frameworkcomputer Laptop 12 might be the most repair-friendly laptop we’ve ever opened. Seriously. It’s shockingly easy to take apart, and for a touchscreen convertible, that’s rare. It earned a 10/10 on our repairability scale thanks to clever engineering choices:

- Screwless SSD clip.
- Cable-free battery removal.
- Clearly labeled mainboard.
- QR codes on every major part.

We tore it down. You can fix it up.

@iFixit @frameworkcomputer I seriously want a Framework laptop but can't bring myself to buy one. Maybe when the MacBook Pro 2015 dies after Apple stops carrying parts.
@mvilain @iFixit @frameworkcomputer that’s the best way to go about it. Buy only when it’s absolutely necessary.

Might be the way to go — when my Mac dies it could inspire me to leave the platform after 40 years

@AccordionBruce @mvilain @iFixit @frameworkcomputer I actually joined the eco-system recently. I got from work a m-series macbook and an iphone. The macbook is great, I love the hardware but I’m going to switch back to android once my current phone’s lease expires.

To be clear, I also have a gaming laptop as a linux machine and when I got both apple devices, I made it a priority to use as little as possible of apple’s services to avoid walled garden trap.

@warriormaster @mvilain Definitely. The greenest laptop is the one you've already got!

Beautiful piece of kit and a great teardown.
@iFixit @frameworkcomputer I don't even need a laptop, but it warms my heart that this exists. Now, if only there was something similar for smartphones. Fairphone seemed promising, but some reviewers said it's not that great, and not available in the US.
@DanDan420 @iFixit @frameworkcomputer It is possible to order a @WeAreFairphone within the US now. My Fairphone3+ is a bit dated at this point but still works as good as when I got it.
@DanDan420 @iFixit @frameworkcomputer I own both a Framework and a Fairphone and even though they have the exact same mission, I can confirm they don't manage it as well.
Framework is what you expect from a laptop. It is as good as a macbook (apart from battery life) or a XPS + it is reparable and "green".
With Fairphone, you make a lot of compromise. Still good, but not as good as a OnePlus for example. I bet making a phone is way harder than a laptop though.
@iFixit @frameworkcomputer I was concerned the screen hinges maybe like Lenovos, but this looks much better off. I do suspect there will be a issue with the keyboard disconnecting as batteries swell and a high chance of corrosion on the spade connector from spills. Still hoping for a decent external battery one day for strength and ease of removal for average joes.
@iFixit @frameworkcomputer I wish more companies would design products like this. I didn't really need a product in this particular class but I've been VERY happy with my framework 16. I've always built my own but I might consider the framework desktop for my next desktop class PC.
@matt The Desktop is awesome, too, but a bit more nuanced. Check out our thread on that if you're interested: https://mastodon.social/@iFixit/114083290133623230
@iFixit @frameworkcomputer I think the use of pogo pins instead of some conector cables is simply great.

@iFixit @frameworkcomputer

Now if they only made cellphones and cars, they'd be the perfect company.

@iFixit @frameworkcomputer if only one could buy them in Aotearoa New Zealand.
