If you've been wanting to switch to a new search engine but didn't want to pay $5/m, https://www.kagi.com will be releasing free accounts shortly:

Within the next week, anyone will be able to use Kagi Search with 50 free searches from the homepage – no sign up, and 100 more if they create a free account.

For context, I've used 140 searches this month

Kagi Search - A Premium Search Engine

Better search results with no ads. Welcome to Kagi (pronounced kah-gee), a paid search engine that gives power back to the user.

@wilbowma 140 searches: is this "times you hit go on the search page"?
because then i think (i'd have to check the logs) i've done more searches *today* than that
@wilbowma I've used 452, I should stop looking for stuff so much I guess

@wilbowma Is there something like kagi, but which doesn't lean into the AI hype-train at all? I'd rather pay more for a similar service to kagi but which explicitly eschews the use of such wastes of energy.

(I've been trying to find such a beast for a long while now, so any ideas you might have would be gratefully received)

@kinnison Not that I’m aware of, unfortunately. Kagi seems to be the least worst option
@wilbowma @kinnison I also would like to find something like that, but have settled with Kagi for now… You could try Ecosia, but IIRC it doesn’t have the same features or results quality as Kagi unfortunately.

@kinnison @wilbowma I use a self-hosted SearXNG, which offers customization options like blocking specific domains or adjusting their priority. I feel that the search quality to be quite comparable to what I got in Kagi trial.

Self-hosting may be a barrier of entry for many people, though.

@lesley @kinnison @wilbowma

I also self host SearXNG and what I would be quite interested in is adding free Kagi to the list of search engines I aggregate.

@wilbowma @dgoldsmith

I remember the owner/founder making some red flag comments about how technology is being ruined by people trying to inject politics into it. Has he grown up at all since then? I haven’t been tracking.

@inthehands @dgoldsmith No the politics is still pretty bad, but is it any worse than Google or Microsoft? I dunno.
