I had fun experimenting with a homemade supersaturated solution of sodium acetate in water.

First, I mixed vinegar and baking soda until the reaction subsided and the pH reached a value of around 7. Then, I boiled the liquid until the solution became supersaturated.

After cooling it further, one can trigger the crystallization of the entire solution by sprinkling small amounts of crystals into it. I do this at around 7 to 8 seconds into the video.

This is what's inside reusable heating pads. The crystallization releases a lot of heat, which I can also feel here. The solution can easily be liquefied again in the microwave. The film shows the second crystallization.
