If you value your time (and partly, your sanity) don't start reading the definitions file that comes with the gnu units(1) command. Therein you will learn more than you might ever want to know about the Gas Mark system, sugar solution concentrations and how many different lengths have been called a "point" in printing.

You can find where the file lives using this command:

units --unitsfile

Beware! Here be dragons!

gnu units(1) knows 8 different printing units that are or were known as 'points'*. For example, Tom Cruise is between 4302–4933 points tall, depending if you use Imprimerie Nationale points or Fournier points. A more current value (4878 pt) is given by:

units '1 tomcruise' point

*: excluding TeX's tiny 'scaled points'. Also, none of these are "paper points", something to do with paper thickness.
