started #TheHundredLine Last Defense Academy and first impressions are wow this game looks *really* nice. the graphics are super sharp on my Switch OLED, I thought RAIN CODE looked amazing but they've improved things even more with the character portraits and cutscenes in this

story is bonkers as you would expect from Kodaka

I'm liking this a lot, still early days (I'm on day 4/100) and only had one battle, but the story is intriguing

Darumi favorite character, she really wants to be in a Danganronpa or Zero Escape game, and not this one 😆 also I squee'd at the Persona reference

after playing quite a bit more today I'm really liking #TheHundredLine!

when you're not battling it plays just like Danganronpa, and the story and dialog is great, and really funny in places

I said the other day there is really no-one else that makes games like this, they have a really unique style that I just love

some more things I like about this game: the soundtrack, it's another Masafumi Takada banger. gonna keep checking Amazon Japan for a CD release!

some of the skill names are great, one of the characters has a skill called "intestinal laceration" 😄

at day 11/100 and it feels like the story is only just getting started

I'm really starting to like the battle system in this game, it's deceptively simple on the surface, but has a lot of hidden depth to it. the game is introducing new characters, mechanics, and unique skills at a slow enough pace that you don't get overwhelmed

only got a C rank in the last battle though, had S in every one so far before that 😥

so far haven't seen anywhere to check your previous scores or replay battles though

it's official, #TheHundredLine now has a rating of "fucking excellent" from me. I have no idea where the story is going but I am fully onboard for this ride

the character and monster designs are great, the soundtrack is banging, and I'm really getting into the battle system (back to S rank on the last battle)

one thing I really appreciate is that it plays like a Danganronpa game, but without the teenage edgelord humour and gross torture/execution scenes

wow that we a hard battle, 4 separate waves with a boss in wave 4 (you get a full heal between waves and any characters who have been killed are brought back to life)

had to restart a couple of waves to get my strategy worked out. really fun combat system in this game

now at day 30/100

#TheHundredLine

this game is utterly bananas

#TheHundredLine

BANANAS

and also very funny, the last few days in game have been quite... something 😄 I don't think I could fully explain what just happened

day 44/100

#TheHundredLine

this game... 😆
there isn't a bad character in this game, the art and writing is fantastic and utterly deranged

was getting ready to curse this game for railroading me into a course of action that I did not want to pursue, but things turned around and it worked out

still think the protag is a dick for going along with Ima and trying to persuade Kako not to fight, rather than telling him to fuck off (and this is after Ima stabbed Takemaru, too!)

I'm really not sure where the "100 different endings" that this game supposedly has are going to come from though, as I've only actually made one conversation choice in the entire game so far, it seems pretty linear

unless (as I suspect) the story branches depending on if you even talk to certain characters at specific times or not. that would be a really cool way of doing it

and I'm sure I read in a preview somewhere that the developers wanted you to feel like the ending you get is the true ending, regardless of which one of the 100 endings you actually get

if this is what is actually happening it will be one of the coolest story telling techniques I've seen in a game, and it wouldn't surprise me that someone like Kodaka would be the one to pull it off

anyway, if you can't tell I'm still really loving this game, and it'll probably even keep me from playing Mario Kart World so much if I haven't finished it by Thursday, it's that intriguing

#TheHundredLine

got through the battle at day 55, the first battle I didn't really enjoy. it introduces a bullshit mechanic (the enemies that cover the battlefield in mist) which makes it pretty un-fun as it really limits your options and means you can be attacked by enemies you can't even see or fight back against

managed to abuse a couple of the more broken items and characters to get an S rank but it felt cheap

a win is a win

❤ Darumi so much

some screenshots from this morning, love this game. Kako and Kyoshika are great characters, but Darumi is still my fav ❤

NO idea where this story is going

did the battle on day 73 at the invader base looking for Ima. my favorite battle of the game so far, managed another S rank

I'm still convinced that Ima wasn't actually abducted when the prisoner escaped, and that we'll find something awful when we do find out what actually happened to him, like he's been turned into an invader or something. we still don't even know what they are

poor Kako, I'm really starting to like her 😥

nearing the end, I think? day 87 was certainly an eventful one, featuring another battle with an annoying gimmick that you have to work around - the sonic attack that causes your characters to have hallucinations (enemy models are not what the enemy actually is) and you can't read your skill or item names

I found it mildly un-fun and I was just glad to get through it, but then the game pulled a Surprise! Extra Boss! so I saved and quit

I do really like the battle system in this game, but some of the fights drag on a bit. plus there is one particularly broken item that trivialized a couple of fights and I felt dirty for abusing it

oh shiiiii- it's all starting to unravel. Darumi is the only one who seems to be enjoying herself now, she really wanted to be in a Danganronpa game all along and she finally got her despair

I'm SO into this story, the writing is excellent

I KNEW IT

also, fuck this game for not letting me save at the start of the fight like every other battle in the game. no for this one you have to ffwd through a 20 minute cutscene to get back to it

why? so annoying

ok after getting one prediction 100% spot on - the identity of the despicable traitor - my next wild stab in the dark about this game is that repeat playthroughs will allow you to change story events, save characters who would otherwise die, etc

they have already established that rewinding time is a thing that exists in this universe, and saving Nozomi/Karua in a future playthrough is definitely a huge motivation for our dear Takumi

I wonder, if we are able to go back and redo events now we know that Eito is the one who sabotaged everything, if we kill him right at the start then all the stuff he did afterwards (killing Hiruko, Sirei, and the prisoner, etc) none of that would happen

but Takumi would have to do it in such a way that he doesn't look like a murderous psycho to everyone else 🤔

I'm just guessing at this point, but if this is what actually happens it will be so cool

I KNEW IT PART II

oh course, the clues were there all along! the protagonists specialist skill is the ability to use the "restart" option from the menu, rewinding time to the start of the current wave in battle. you think it's just a videogame thing but no, it's an in-universe power

it all makes sense now, so so cool

and done, #TheHundredLine is a masterpiece. I'm calling it now, this will be my GOTY 2025 unless Trails in the Sky First Chapter Remake is very special indeed

TooKyo Games, you mad bastards

god dammit, I wanted to finish this game to make some space for Raidou Remastered later this week, but now I just want to start my second playthrough
couple of bits of funny dialog from the final day, the characters in this are so good, TooKyo really know their audience (me) 😅

the way NG+ works in this is excellent. you travel back in time to day 1/100 and can redo the entire game, keep your upgrades and unlocked skills etc. so far so normal for NG+

but your character, Takumi, also retains all his knowledge of the timeline of events and the story, world, characters etc, he literally travels back in time rather then just starting the game again

so the first thing I did when I started my second playthrough was kill the traitor who sabotaged everything the first time but now everyone thinks I'm a psycho and my excuse of "it's ok guys, I'm from the future!" didn't exactly convince them I wasn't crazy

the story is playing out completely differently, not just slightly different dialogue here or there, but new events and a totally different timeline

and you can understand and talk to the invaders this time round, you couldn't communicate with them the first time. I wonder how much more I'll learn about what's actually going on

genius

seriously, don't read that if you've any intention of playing this game at some point

I have so many questions I want answered:

just who the hell is Hiruko? she's really powerful and originally said she had been fighting the invaders for some time before you meet her, but then she got murdered before you could learn more. is she another time traveler? 🤔

just who or what are the invaders? what's their motivation? I don't buy the World Death explanation

what is on the artificial satellite? the first ending you get with the garbled message made it sound far from the idyllic escape we were promised

what's the actual plan for day 100 if we successfully complete the mission? it all went terribly wrong the first time

just how many times am I going to play through this game? 😅 I can see the timeline getting crazy complicated

DARUMI GOT HER WISH 😄 we're basically in Danganronpa now

the chapter select in NG+ has codes for where you are in the timeline, so I'll tag my posts with these in case you are playing yourself

the last 3 digits are the day number

I said it before, but this game is BANANAS

I can't remember getting this obsessed with a game for quite a while, all day at work I've been thinking about what's happening in my current playthrough, and can't wait to get home to fire the game up

this game has burrowed into my brain, it's a beautiful, insane thing

#TheHundredLine

honestly, this game is shaping up to be a top 5 all-timer for me, the way it goes from the utterly surreal (bee parachute) to bloody violence to heartfelt moments to juvenile cum jokes in the space of half an hour makes my head spin in the best possible way. it's like the fevered scribblings of a mad genius
is this a vampire game now? 😳
@COMPU73E it has to spectacularly fuck up to NOT be an all time favourite by this point. (which sadly, some games has managed this. freakin Fatal Twelve.)

@COMPU73E goty

I had three back to back incredible games, this is the third one. I don't think this ever happened in my life before

@BigShellEvent I keep thinking about how one of the main characters has a giant green tomato for a head, and that's somehow one of the least crazy things about it
@COMPU73E for real, and while most of us got into it for danganronpa, I have to admit when it comes to skeletal structure and layering and making a story making full sense, you really need zero escape
@COMPU73E i need to play this game lmao
@frenziedstars you totally should, it's amazing. have you ever played any of the Danganronpa games?

@COMPU73E aha i have! i'm a big danganronpa fan, i've played them all (except for ultra despair girls), watched the anime, and read some of the light novels/short stories to better understand the lore lol

that post makes me think of the kinda stuff miu iruma would say in v3 😆 or maybe tenko...

@frenziedstars I haven't played V3 but I finished the first two 😄 The Hundred Line is made by all the same people so you should definitely check it out (and don't read any of my spoiler posts!)

@COMPU73E I think we are diverging enough now that we should not read each other's spoiler posts.

But also, lol here's our answer on how the branching works

@BigShellEvent I'm so glad I didn't look anything up before playing through this, my mind was blown yesterday

I'll just tag all my posts with NG+ and the day number, and come back and talk to you in about six months, I guess 😅

@COMPU73E hahahhaha yup. The scope of this game is wild.

Zero Time Dilemma already broke my brain so I wasn't too WOW'd by this, but I can foresee good stuff happening

@COMPU73E also you probably want to get this now, cheapest I've ever seen and I'm concerned the studio might not survive

@COMPU73E ok so, the chapters are coded. We can CW with it to prevent spoilers
@COMPU73E Btw I saw Jack Frost in the Raidou trailer and wanted to ask you whether it might be a game worth playing. I guess this confirms it 😄

@COMPU73E
Damn. That’s some high praise.
If it weren’t for the fact that I’m starting the early shift tomorrow,I’d start the game myself.

But since I can’t really play during those weeks, that would just be a bit too much torture…

@outofprintarchive all that stuff Kodaka said before the game came out, about him betting the entire company on it because it was the game he always wanted to make, he wasn't lying. it's a beautiful, mad, utterly unique game. I can see me getting obsessed with it, I have so many questions I want answered about the story and characters

don't read my spoiler posts until you've finished your first playthrough, it's one of those games you *have* to experience blind the first time

@COMPU73E
It’s been so hard not to click on them. 😅
But I’ve preserverend so far.
Just read a couple at the very start but that’s it. I don’t think they were actual spoilers back then either.
At least I don’t remember reading anything concerning story or anything.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my 3 week vacation next month and what I want to do.
But I don’t think I’ll be able to hold off starting this game for another 4 weeks now. 😄

@COMPU73E Ooh I might check this one out, thank you for the rec!

@tashasounart please do, it's so good! if you're a fan of visual novels with really good stories, then you'll love it. it has grid based SRPG battles but they're not super complicated
