after truning android devloppment private, accepting contribution no longer,

after publishing only major version in a single squashed commit

google remove device file and device drivers from sources, it's serious and very worrying

so google is basically trying very hard to kill all customs roms , making near impossible to build one (because it require at least retro-ingennering all changes mades by google to re-create these files)

and linux phone are ages ago to be publicly usable versions
(even arm support on linux is very very late)

so what we do now ?

@moonlight_seashell That was the strangest, yet most relatable poem I've read in a while. :p

@moonlight_seashell Yeah, that is quite worrisome for custom android rom developers and users.

I use Linux on my phone, I love using it and it's my preferred choice, however I don't see it as something anyone could just pick up and go; at least not as of yet.

Waydroid could help, but I can see new users who'd have the patience to build that as one of their first installs.

@Shredd_Tone what phone and os you use ?

@moonlight_seashell I'm actually using a Librem 5 with PureOS, it's default OS.

I honestly would encourage new users to try using Ubuntu Touch on specific devices that can take Waydroid for installing Android apps first, or even try any Linux distro on PC's/Laptops first and foremost if anyone wants to take that route. PureOS on my device is sophisticated but too technical atm.

@Shredd_Tone iv already try ubuntu mobile because i have a pinephone and i truly dislike the desktop env

but thanks for these infos

you can last a day with a single charge ? and how about the responsivness ?

@moonlight_seashell Dislike, you mean?
I personally liked the desktop layer tbh. I really love the fact that the tilt function also rotated the wallpaper and zoomed in/out depend on size of the image, even during the lockscreen

Sorry it didn't work out for you, but the pinephone looked cool. What other OS did you use?

@Shredd_Tone
iv try basicaly every os ubuntu posmarket arch manjaro

but i jus cannot have more than 2/3 h of battery
and when the phone is under hi load ,he can overheat and shutdown
(happen when i try to download the complete french map in one time on osm scout)

(i have the pinephone pro)

most of apps takes a lot of time to start
most of apps (firefox included) d ont support any harware acceleration so
playing youtube, in 360p max
(on web , only angelfish and epiphany works ok on video but i just cannot us them as daily driver)

some os just cannot handle sms properly (iv not try mms)

even if i tryed very hard to use this phone,
the ppp looks cool on the paper but its just not usable, even as a dev device it's anoying

@moonlight_seashell Damn, I wasn't expecting to hear that for the PinePhone Pro.

2-3 hours! Is that on stand by or while using the phone?

@Shredd_Tone 2/3 h using it
it can be a lot less if using it for hi demanding tasks like compiling

@moonlight_seashell
Sounds like GNU/Linux still has a ways to go before it can eventually become accessible and usable for all.

Then again, my Ubuntu Touch Device worked very well for me before it lost it's support; and understandably so. But, still needs more time.

@Shredd_Tone
personaly i d'ont really see how desktop env can become as good as android using gnome or plasma as a base

and the graphic software centers have never been very good on pc
so on a small cpu on a phone it just cannot be great

i have tryed phosh plasma m and gnome m

plasma looks promising (the only one with a desktop wtf ?),
phosh is well works i guess
and gnome looks better but even apps as simple as an sms gui can be , is was messed up
gnome message is over complicated even for creating a new chat

i just d ont understand whow it's possible to fail such a simple gui apps, making simple thigns overcomplicated

@moonlight_seashell
What about Phosh, I found that to be pretty good on a phone

@Shredd_Tone there is no desktop
you only have either the app drawer or app themself

on gnome desktop you can drag and drop apps into whatever virtual desktop you want, and you have a large screen

so on a phone without virtual desktop having running apps and app drawer on the same screen does not make a lot of sense (and there is no recent button)

on gnome mobile the recent/running apps take less space , giving more space for the icons

on phosh you have a single list of apps and you cannot group them or organize them
you can just pin some apps

this is not a very great experience if you use a lot of apps
on gnome mobile instead of the single scollable list you have pages of apps and folder of apps
and you can order them as you want

and from what i see there is no retrun button or shortcut even if this is a standard in mobile world

if you connect an external screen, there is no "standard" way to move the app to the other screen
and you d'ont have the maximise widow buttons

@Shredd_Tone
maybe fine for a basic usage and for linux enthusiast

but probably insuficient for the average android user and not great for power users

for having three full pages of application folders and widgets on my android launcher
I can't see how I could translate that to phosh

even though we're far from having as wide a range of applications as huge as android
but also that many apli can be replaced by their web version because we have true web browsers.

except that an application will always be much lighter than a web application (electron aside).
