We would still need some sort of law enforcement on the federal level. Provincial forces would just allow places for the roaches in the RCMP to hide.
We need to have a plan to deal with them before we tear down the building lest they infest others.
How do you propose abolishing the police? What would that look like?
I don’t actually propose abolishing law enforcement, I want it to be completely over hauled. Learn lessons from other countries. Implement the giod ones here.
Also root out all of the people with old types of thinking.
If younare going to have a rules based society there needs to be a mechanism to enforce those rules. Police as theybare set up aren’t the answer, but neither is no law enforcement.
I’m also not arrogant enough to think my ideas as to what it should look is actually coherent.
So which country has good police.
I said good ideas from other countries.
But, we can start looking at which one have single digit or lower yearly body counts nationally as they seem to be doing something right.
It’s not copy, it’s learn and adapt.
I mean the UK had cops without guns so that’s a good start.

It’s easier to reform a provincial police force than a federal one. And Ontario hasn’t opposed Doug Ford enough to get someone in better who will up their standards.
They can’t be worse than the RCMP where Justin Trudeau sat on his hands from actually fixing the systematic problems with them while they oppressed everyday people.

The RCMP is problematic to say the least, both from a historical perspective and also their modern practices.
But provincial forces are worse, and can too easily controlled by partisan governments. Just look at what Smith is trying to do here in Alberta.
I disagree as it allows provinces to set higher standards and guarantees safety from a potential fascist take over the federal government in 4 years having all the power without oversight. Wab Kinew would do a phenomenal job in reforming the police and BC used to have one but then one provincial government ended it overnight without the consultation of the people. I’m sure the people of Newfoundland & Labrador and New Brunswick would appreciate having more say in holding the cops accountable.
I want indigenous people to police themselves not some randos from the rcmp barging into their lands oppressing them in favour of resource development.
Why would we want this? Provincial cops get their own little corruption bubbles.
What I really want, is a police police. Non LEOs who are only LEOs to LEOs.
This is what would clean up polices scandals. None of this “we investigated ourselves and found no wrong doing” nonsense.
People who have an incentive to arrest cops and no incentive not to.
How does decentralizing the police automatically result in lowering standards? The ndp and liberal provinces can be pushed to increase their standards.
It does so be allowing massive differences between forces, just like happens in the US with any topic that becomes about “states rights”.
A few places will do excellently, and a large portion will immediately be hit by massive corruption.
This almost always leads to situations that rich people can abuse that poor people cannot. The rich can go to areas that they know certain things won’t be caught, and then go back home to safer areas etc.
Basically, it just allows for the lowering of standards just as much as the raising of them, and unlike the federal level guaranteeing a decent federal minimum, provincially this would not happen.
We can actually already see this with the OPP lowering their hiring standards and generally being worse than the RCMP.
You could keep the RCMP in those conservative provinces.
Nice in theory, but then you’re still not getting any benefit and just allowing those other provinces to eventually get the same problems.
The big problem is that this isn’t a solution to anything and what we really need is a police police that only governs the police and has no incentives to cover up their abuses.
You’re ignoring the potential for higher standards, we need to decentralize the police since consolidating their power in the hands of the few is dangerous.
It’s easier for people to convince their mlas to improve the standards instead of going all the way to Ottawa for the same conversation.
