Tons of spam accounts on mastodon targeting artists pretending to want to buy art but wanting to get you to make NFTs. All the same profile content and M.O. but different faces and names.
I reported one yesterday and two this morning. #artist beware. #mastodon
@JoBlakely Sorry, but what is a NFT? And could you list these spam accounts, and report them to your admin of your Mastodon server? Thx.

@JoBlakely forc i think artists in most reputable corners of fedi treat nfts like the idea of bathing in lava

but ty for heads up!

@hi_cial they aren’t upfront about what they want at first, and pretend to want to buy your actual art. It starts out not about NFTs at all. They don’t want to pay you for the art they say they want to buy, unless you put it on an nft platform.

@JoBlakely ohhhh yeah still unlike to fly, as most of us have had our share of scammers and so often discuss our payment stuff up front.

like true crime if they try to move us to a second location (ie, weird payment platform) we tend to thanks but no thanks >.>

but still, might be some new person just starting their biz who needs to know this!

@hi_cial exactly. I want people to know it’s happening because Ive shut down variations of art scams but It’s still disappointing and better to see and block right away to avoid that letdown and time wasting. I get right to money and terms, but they avoid confirming that until they reveal their true motives.
I should have blocked when I saw they were into crypto they were a grifter.
@JoBlakely at least it isnt the ol deviantart chatbot "let me use your work in my mural" spam/scam....
@hi_cial or the I want to commission something personalized for my son’s birthday scam with payment by cheque.

@JoBlakely lmao they love me on that one cuz i go ok! ill wait for it to get here and cash it and we can keep discussing then :)

the -fit- they throw lol

@hi_cial their birthday is to try to make you rush it and not wait for it to clear.

@JoBlakely yea at this point anyone in a rush who isnt a furry with clear indicators of being a real person usually last min gift shopping for a friend, im instantly suspect

that sense of HURRY HURRY HURRY is a huge part of many scams. if you dont have time to think, you dont have time to realize its a grift.

@JoBlakely I wish there was no "open registration" setting & it was all by approval so this wouldn't happen.
