Hong Kong protestors say:

"Do Not Split."

Do not condemn the people on your side who embrace tactics you disagree with.

Do. Not. Split.
#doNotSplit

@cykonot The one thing HKers weren't very good at, was building lasting offline support networks though.
Lots of kids (due to trying to stay anonymous) were left to deal with the results of their experiences on their own.

@firefly @cykonot

This is why the Chinese government recognized the need to isolate, control and surveil their country's internet to such an extreme, to stamp out any potential it has to bring people together in common cause.

@firefly Left to deal how? Can you say more?

(Also any pointers to accounts of these issues with examples super welcome. I am in a position to do something about this, educate me.)

@siderea @cykonot Sorry, but many accounts on twitter from that time went silent already a few years ago, due to the dangers now.
There was a gap between the younger people and their parents views. Many lied to protect themselves, their fellow protestors and their families too. During protests people coordinated. But on location and anonymously via various means.

I was just (an also foreign) observer. Am not at liberty to tell you more.

@siderea If you mean experiences: There are a few hk films, that deal with issues and trauma: "night is young", there is one short film about the polytechnic university siege ( but don't think it is in circulation), student suicide rates have been climbing since 2019 in hk.
A few (in comparison) were prosecuted.
And I remember that they started reminding each other to drink water and (each on their own) to watch their mental health.
Right now. There is a feeling of hopeless and helplessness.
PTSD and protests: How the violence on Hong Kong’s streets impacts mental health

The first panic attack took place two weeks after Sarah (not her real name) was caught in the middle of an evening protest in Admiralty on September 29, during which multiple rounds of tear-gas were fired by the police. “I’ve never felt afraid for my life. I’ve always been brave,” she told HKFP. “I’ve always […]

There's a lot to be learned from the HK protests.

They were really disciplined and smart, but at a disadvantage because the city was isolated from a highly propagandized and brainwashed mainland population that was cheering on the brutalization of the protestors

In the US we see acts of protest springing up in multiple cities already, that is a good sign, maga is the minority and while they are just as brutal and fascist as the CCP, they're much less efficient right now. Organize.

Yeah. You against nazis? You're on my side. All I need to know.

@cykonot is there a full text version of this? if so, could you link to it please?

The movement is leaderless but not chaotic. It self-regulates even as it constantly reinvents itself.

@cykonot
That's how the people at the protests behave-- all of us together.

Now if only everybody would act like that!

@cykonot love this. where is this from? I’d like to share elsewhere.

@Cykonot Do not split seems a wise idea for one, however the use or deliberate non-use of force also seems too actively divisive to survive within that idea.
The use of force is, luckily after all, practised by particular minorities on either side of a conflict. Either side is bargaining between moral and efficiency and realisation of their idea, and in that regard actively self-isolating from #donotsplit. Let's leave them there.
