Let's get this #CrossBorderRail day digitally started! 🙂

Welcome to today's thread - 2025 #CrossBorderRail Finale Day 3 - 9 June - Trstená - Nowy Targ - Gdańsk

Today's new borders:
Podczerwone 🇵🇱 - Suchá Hora 🇸🇰

What am I doing today?

An early morning start from Trstená on a dismantled railway line, now cycle path, to Nowy Targ (PL). Then a slow InterCity train across Poland, avoiding Warszawa, to Gdańsk. And maybe an evening trip to Hel as well.

Here's today's #CrossBorderRail music track

I might make a trip to Hel today if I have time. If not at least there is the song!

#CrossBorderRail Finale Bike 5 of 39
Trstená - Nowy Targ

Distance: 37.5km
Est. duration: 2:30

This bike route, mapped: https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/crossborderrail-2025-finale_1163738#12/49.3896/19.7998

This was an impeccable cycle path - smooth, good condition. Only downside: the scenery was a bit bland for large parts of it. A kind of flat high plateau...

And that means today's only new #CrossBorderRail border - Podczerwone 🇵🇱 - Suchá Hora 🇸🇰 - is now behind me

BORDER 2️⃣9️⃣9️⃣ of the project 🎉

But this one has no hope

The track Kraľovany - Trstená 🇸🇰 and Nowy Targ - Kraków 🇵🇱 are both slow and winding, Trstená - Nowy Targ is now an impeccable cycle path, and so it will stay

If we are to really get into the details of it, there are no buildings blocking the former railway's route anywhere

Two small bridges were removed, would need to be re-built

The main bridges are all intact, and there are no tunnels

But the real problem is here: https://openrailwaymap.org/?style=standard&lat=49.44453787281973&lon=19.933576583862305&zoom=15 - the village has sort of developed around where the railway was. You'd get massive backlash trying to re-open it there

#CrossBorderRail 2025 Finale

The final big #CrossBorderRail tour - to the eastern borders of the EU, and missing intra-EU borders. In June-July 2025. Each day of the project is a Layer in the map - these should be displayed by default, or if not click the three layered diamonds icon "Open browser" to the left side of the map. The icons are all for borders, roughly coloured to differentiate the borders. A cross through a track means NO TRAINS CAN RUN. A cross through trains but not track means TRAINS CAN RUN BUT NO PASSENGER TRAINS. And TRAIN AND TRACK (no crosses) means there is a passenger service.

And you're going to have to make do without an intro video today

I tried at 04:30 in the hotel in Trstená but it didn't work, and WiFi here on the IC is broken

So text only today! 😀

There's a dude in this Polish train with 1312 tattooed on his neck

"What the hell happened in Poland in 1312?" I wondered.

The 1312 division of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) by the sons of Henry III, Duke of Silesia-Glogau - would anyone have a tattoo for that? 🤔

Ah no 😀 I forgot the (international) obvious one! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACAB

ACAB - Wikipedia

Ah

Journalist I really trust is on holiday, person filling in for them emails me for a quote about something breaking I had no idea was happening

😱 Hang on, have I missed something because PKP IC's WiFi does not work here?

I go for honesty in response - I don't know what this is about, I'm in the middle of nowhere, you have to give me more context!

😅 Turns out it was embargoed and my cluelessness was understandable

Oh and I could give a good quote!

Thread has been a bit quiet... I have been doing some non-#CrossBorderRail work and enjoying this trip across the middle of Poland

The transformation of rail in Poland in the past decade is really something

Faster, cleaner, more regular, better trains, better service. Great to see

Also on Polish railways *there's so much happening*

Repairs, renovations, freight, local trains, new trains, old trains, nice trains, knackered trains, not everything centred on Warszawa

So much fun traveling here (when it works, which it mostly does!)

Someone left a Clé de Berne in the toilet of this train! Let’s hope no passenger knows what you can do with that 😜
Yep. That’s why I’m here!
It’s a super route
Back window action to Hel
I made it!

@jon

To Hel? Getting back is the challenge...

@knud @jon only if U go there by bus ;)
@Barbara_Sliwinska @knud @jon not possible anymore due to katotaliban activities in the area :)
@jon crossborder rail but paved with good intentions 😉
@jon check local buss line. There was 666 from Hel to Władysławowo (maybe even to Rumia). Not sure if it is still running.
@jon is this somewhere in Israel?
@julesbl It's in Poland, on a peninsular north of Gdansk
@jon We go to Hel most summers so I can heartily recommend the Kutter restaurant on the main street - it’s been there for years and has great fish and chips and pizza.
@escottf Only 20 mins there, sadly. But I will return!
@jon The inner port has a protected beach (it faces away from the Baltic) but walking through the forest to the Baltic side of the peninsula gets you kilometres of pristine sandy beaches. I’m not one for sunbathing but end up walking a lot.
No 666 to Hel: Polish bus route drops ‘devil’s number’ after Christian protests

Operator announces route to town of Hel has been redesignated as No 669 – a change that has prompted public outcry

The Guardian
@jon Funny talking mode on? 😉
@jon But will you make it back?
@NarrelleMHarris I’m back 😀
@jon good work! I haven’t been to that part of the world in a while. Nice to see photos!
@NarrelleMHarris it’s s great area. My first time here and I like it!
@NarrelleMHarris I know most of central and south Poland well but until now haven’t been north
@jon
someone who does morse code, what does it say?
@jon somebody is knocking, just open up already! :)
@jon now that's a line that requires an upgrade. Although taking into account the rising sea levels we might not have the time to complete it :/
@jon A train to Hel is obviously superior to a highway!
@jon met anyone from the Danish #Cyklistforbundet ?
@Chris not yet. It starts tomorrow really!
@jon, I think Dan Kollár from @cyklokoalicia should be around.
@jon Hopefully you can get up to speed!
😜
@jon Did you have to pay the €700+ ticket fee? I would love to go one year but it is not reasonable at all...
@corentin I reduced it to €300 as a speaker. But it is still damned expensive!
@jon Come to the French bike congress next year, the 2 day pass is only €50 if you are in a member association 😅
@jon I love PKP's old reconditioned communist-era carriages with compartments, still a few around.
@timrichards @jon If you take regional services from Wroclaw to Poznan (and I mean trains that do that route specifically, not anything shorter), you may still get the double-decker ones. Super quiet and super confortable, they really don't make them like that any more, though there are definitely no modern amenities, and accessibility for the mobility impaired probably isn't too great either.
@miki @jon By chance I was thinking about those double-deckers yesterday, as I passed one here in Romania.
@jon and it's real, as I look into delay of your train: at some point it was 22 min late, but it's on time again
@LachAnonym Yes, one track closed north of Kraków, but then they turned around quick in Bydgoszcz
@jon The seemingly endless farmland can get kinda boring at times, though xd
@HaTetsu I am used to Berlin-Wolfsburg. This doesn't bore me 😀
@jon btw: there was 'ancestor' of this phrase in poland, since communist times.
it is 'ChWDP' - something like 'f*ck you, police' (and literally 'dick in police's ass) 👌
