You boost it and immediately recognise it as made by the Danganronpa crowd based on the sound alone.

Yeah... So content warning for people with cynophobia. You are in for a nasty surprise in the first cutscene.
Metal Gear Solid really influenced a generation huh. The opening scene is 17 minutes long lol
This is for people who do enjoy strategy games where characters move on rows of squares: is The Hundred Line good purely as a strategy game, compared to its peers?
The reason I'm asking is I'm early on, and so far it looks like it can go either way. This studio always stands out at the narratives, though historically I've yet to see them do well at making gameplay that's not narrative based like, ever. I'm not sure if I want to put myself through playing as normal, when the strategy game portion is basically that Danganronpa skateboard game.
If it's like Deadly Premonition, the less game you play the better the game is, I want to know early so it doesn't destroy my joy in it.
Spoiler warning all of them because speculations. Do not reply with spoilers lol.
Yeah interesting, blood in this game isn't pink.
In any other games, five spare cabins indicative of five extra characters to be introduced. Given it's a Too Kyo game, I'm guessing the protagonist will be giving birth to quintuplets.
Mostly for me to remember things myself, because the game started with character dump (which tbh always worked), but no Kanji available as an aesthetic. So automatically I can't remember any of the Anglicised names lol. Please do not give me your character hot takes because of spoilers.
Takumi Sumino: protagonist, so far archetype normie. Given previous Too Kyo trend, I'm going for yet another imposter mastermind wiped his own memory. (I really really did not like this plot being reused in Rain Code). Has a good fighting range/versatility.
Takemaru Yakushiji: archetype delinquent. Surprisingly useful as a tank on motorbike, seems like the game balance encourage defensive play based on how useful he was in first battle. Endurance/mobility -> Gym points; BP, plants
Hiruko Shizuhara: archetype arrogant snob. Very strong DPS, best used being shoved in a corner because she's squishy as. Possibly on her multiple new game plus. Analytic-> Maths point; plants textile
Darumi Amemiya: archetype otaku-alt nerd who is way too into Danganronpa. Seems to be a versatile useful character but I wouldn't know considering she was the first battle's scripted red splat. Creativity -> Linguistic point; textile minerals
Eito Aotsuko: hospitalised a lot, gender ambiguous (I hope we never know tbh). The combat style is... Idk, interchangeable to protagonist? Calculation/analysis -> Maths point; minerals and machines
Tsubasa Kawana: mechanic with anxiety issues. Vomits a lot. Technology -> Science point; machines and BP
Gaku Maruko: probably born poor, violently swinging between reasonable and super antagonising. Yeah later on it's alleged he's born an orphan and being parentalised into caring for 20 foster siblings. Observation/Exploration -> Social Studies points; BP and textile
Ima Tsukumo: twin 1, into incest. Possibly also grew up homeless but wants a lordling image. Investigation/Technology -> Science points;
Kako Tsukumo: twin 2, meekly trying to escape twin 1. Observation -> Social studies points;
Shouma Ginzaki: literally Elk from .Hack . Literacy/Creativity -> Linguistics points; Plants and minerals
***
Kyoshika Magadori: Bushido from a bush. Has a cartoon kitten on her outfit for some reasons. Out of touch from reality. Mobility -> Gym points; BP and minerals
Yugamu Omokage: assassin with a painted eye. Has a killing kink. Investigation -> Science points; plants and textile
Kurara Oosuzuki: Heirloom tomato. Timid without tomato. Not a real royal. Exploration -> Social Studies; minerals and machines
Nozomi Kirifuji: Karua clone who seems to have an actual personality. Calculation -> maths points; textile and machines
Moko Mojiro: Was busy as a hostage. Pro wrestler. Supposedly heart of the party. Endurance -> Gym points
***
Eva: Nature commander, somehow in a shut down submissive mode because Sirei did something. Literacy -> Linguistic points;
VR training so far
- IDFK what is a turn even, it seems to be completely random?
- However it's absolutely not a surprise that Hiruko dies within a turn.
Hiruko sure talks lots of shit for someone who is the worst dead weight of the team.
What makes Hundred Line distinctively different to Danganronpa is, how much I like a character also is highly related how useful they are as battle units. If they suck ass and act like they are bees knees, hard no.
Observations:
Character armbands on their left arms are numbered, and interestingly most shots are taken from the right.
Protagonist is 0
Takemaru is 1
Hiruko is 2
Darumi I think is ???
Eito is 4
Tsubasa
Gaku 6
Who even counts starting 0 lol.
Also, on title screen, if you press on any options, it flashes into the Alien font.
Lol Hiruko just casually used that transforming blade as a weapon against the alien commander, who she knew is also capable of transform.
Just lucky that thing didn't end up re-transformed and add another 3 waves of fights.
So far I recognised like 99999 danganronpa references, a persona reference, and a black lagoon (???!?!) reference from Darumi. Because it's Darumi, somehow it's not forced at all.
I'm a bit worried about the mean buns on the convoy belt in the kitchen, but somehow I suspect Darumi would be all about cannibalism.
PROJECTILE VOMIT IS LIKE THE BEST WEAPON EVER WHY ISN'T TSUBASA TRULY EMBRACE IT
Like when I was a child right, I could vomit by command. And so I- ok im sparing you the details but trust me, it's a useful skill
At this point, I feel that the general cast of Hundred Line is a lot intentionally nicer and normaller than Danganronpa, and I mean this both in a positive and negative way. Even the abrasive characters are not intensively and pointlessly antagonising like say Miu or Kokichi, and even the mutiny so far isn't pure anarchy like Danganronpa.
Now I think Hiruko is a dreadful leader, even just from the lack of transparency and how all she achieved so far is build mistrust. But it's also not quite like trolling for shit and giggles either.
I kinda miss the way the cast would organise themselves in rebellion in Danganronpa instead. Everyone here just felt so diplomatic and reasonable in comparison. Good in reality, in a chaotic fiction I just wish someone would move swing the fan around when shit hits, so there's a good even coating of the shit mist.
My Darumi theory is, there is a distinctive and intentional decision from the writers to make a Danganronpa character, but likable.
This is to say I really appreciate characters like Junko or Miu, but it's actually nice that someone has their energy don't also genuinely terrify me.
Sorry I kinda don't care about Hiruko. Her only strength was in extra info, which she made a theatrical show on withholding on; and as an ingame combater she's Z tier.
Which I'm sure is the real decoy in this game's 5D chess but still. The game play is basically screaming this is the one character made to be sacrificed early.
The real power fantasy is playing as someone who has an innate circadian rhythm. I'm sure Takimi isn't time blind either. Bastard.
I'm also super impressed how he's a teenager and maintained that neat bedroom for three weeks. Even accounting he owns nothing, I'd still struggle to do the same.
