AbnormalHumanBeingFun fact: Those weird paintings of Jesus as an “adult baby” are actually intentional. This was an attempt at representing that in the interpretation of the time, Jesus entered this world already fully perfected/divine, without having to have gone through an “imperfect” phase.
I can’t think of a single baby oil painting that looks like a baby but maybe I’m remembering wrong or they were all jesus idk

During the Renaissance, there were certainly a lot of the weirdly adult baby Jesus paintings, but there were also realistic examples from the time (that one is Raphael, one of the great masters).

Also, the visages were of real men. Often the patrons of the painter or someone else to be honored.

I’d believe they mastered lighting and painting techniques over accurate physical representation more than “Jesus was a perfect middle aged nippleless man with fucked up hands and that’s represented perfectly here”
