I think everything we think of as “science” (the scientific method, replication, peer review, etc etc) is emergent of one single thing. What do you think that is?

Tbh I disagree - I think large parts are cultural. Peer review is pretty recent, for example!
@hankgreen I think it's something like the feeling of safety. If we can replicate an experiment and get the same result every time, we can be sure that that's how that thing works. We cannot disprove a theory? Well, then that's our best guess at figuring it out, and so on. Peer review makes sure that other people can spot something we might have missed or give further insight into other perspectives. All of it is this big safety net that binds our collective knowledge together to build on
