I am so ready for @cate 's raccoon wisdom.

"No one will ever care more about your career than you"

#CraftConf2025

@cate

On setting real career goals

Proximate objective:
- should challenge you but feel possible
- you should learn something
- should be within your control
- you should want to do it

@cate

"Let's get real... Promotions are a level of capitalism and capitalism is a con" 😈

@cate

BUT! "Creating opportunities is more under our control than we think."

I really resonate with this. Creating the space and possibility in your life for more is something I care a lot about

@cate

"Do the things that you actually like"
Great point about putting yourself "out there" in the ways that are GENERATIVE and being discerning about what you take on and what you don't

"When someone asks you to do something is a great time to negotiate" 😂

@cate

"The title is a few words... The work is 40 hours a week" this is the same advice that a professor gave me back in grad school years ago and it's still good... We get hung up on the titles and the labels but you have to really think about what you'll be doing with your time and whether you like it

@cate

Making the distinction between goals and dreams: strategy creates the execution between the two. "That's how you connect your proximate objectives and your dreams"

I love Cate's emphasis on the environmental factors and exploration as an adaptive process across our lifespans!

@cate

Relying too much on your one manager is relying too much on one person (Amen!). We need whole support systems to meet all our needs! This is true for careers and other human relationships!

@cate

I love that work bff is on this list 🥰

@cate

Cate's emphasizing that we have a *relationship* with where we are and where we want to be, and our journey across the gap. "The sweet spot of growth is about being out of your comfort zone with help" and evaluating what help is really available is a part of this picture

Coachability can be something that's under our control that lets us maximize what we have.

@cate

"High trust high respect relationships" SHOULD be different from low trust and low respect relationships -- feedback can be valuable in both cases but seeing the high trust relationships for the gift they are helps us deeply

@cate "tech is not that special and there's plenty we can learn from other industries" 🔥🔥🔥

@cate a great protip -- "people prefer to give advice over feedback"

Also "feedback is a gift and sometimes it's a gift you need to return" 😂

@cate Cate live modeling how to discard bad sexist feedback about her voice from men on the Internet 😇 but then also figuring out a useful piece of information about her pacing (maybe DESPITE the bullshit)...too relatable
@cate it's "a gift for our resilience and growth" to be able to heal your feedback trauma 💯💯

@cate

Thinking CONSTRUCTIVELY about quitting your job can be an important ritual -- Cate does it every year! Assess key factors like whether you're learning, whether you're learning coping instead of skills (!), you feel conflicted about hiring (!!), or job is affecting your confidence or physically. Real talk.

@grimalkina @cate that is such a healthy thing to do and I completely agree and recommend to all, even my reports. 👏
