So I’m not big into physical modelling, but when Dad brought this to my attention I knew I had to have it! It’s gonna take some months to paint, drill, wire, and assemble this thing - but I think it’s gonna look so cool when it’s done! I love the design of the Miranda-class! :eyes:

I’m also apparently a glutton for punishment as somehow I need to fit this in with my dad on top of job searching and my existing hobbies!

So update: I have been masking off the stars I want lit and going through all the pieces with a a pass of primer. The next stage is to paint the inside black to prevent light bleed… so a as good start overall!

The Miranda-class is going well. The inside has been painted black to stop light leakage, certain areas has been filed to allow cabling to be run through for lighting, and the curious for the drill holes of the windows has been taped on.

Drilling the window holes is going to be a long process - so a new update want be the a while, but I’m pleased how everything is progressing!

So much progress has been made since my last post:The Miranda-class has had the windows drilled, the first pass for the exposed grey bits of the back has been done on the top (as well as the grey/red band across the bridge), and the mask used so I could emulate the registration light on the real thing has come off, and works a lot better then I could've hoped.
The initial coat for the bottom grey bits have also been done; I have discovered the grey we were gonna use didn't match the grey on the top section, so that'll be fixed with subsequent layers of paint.

The inner nacelles where the warp coils are has also been painted clear-blue, as have the parts of the deflector dish that'll be lit up... But I don't have pictures of them... 😅

The next step for the top half of the saucer is to have the aztecing applied, with the bottom still needing a few more layers of grey paint to be applied before we do the same with that.

It's hard to believe it's virtually been a month since I last posted an update!

The underneath defector dish section had it's second coat of paint not long after my last post - getting rid of the unintentional "battle damage" look with the 2 greys. It only had 2 coats in total and it has ended up looking very good!

Dad has spent most of the month applying some aztecing decals to the model; we both agreed that this was outside my capabilities (it was borderline with Dad's)... It was frustrating and finically getting the decals on the model, but I think the end result is very visually appealing. An additional coat of white paint was also applied before the photo as the decal's shade of grey was too dark.

Most recently we've started to wire up a lighting kit designed for this specific Reliant model AMT sells. So far only the nacelles are wired up with the LEDs. First time I got to see light pass the clearcoat blue on the inner nacelle.

Also as a bonus - here is the look at the nacelles after the decals were applied, but BEFORE we began wiring the lighting kit into them. Mainly to show what the clear blue looks like when no light is passing through them.

Another update, another month where I didn't get around to doing it. 😅

A lot of progress once again has happened: The navigation lights (single red/green and white LED bulbs) has been added and soldered into a central wiring loom. A logic board (that's part of the lighting kit) has been stuck in place with silicone, and is connected to the wiring loom for each light that's going on.

Next up was the assembly, which involved lining up the warp nacelle struts into place (along with aligning them to be perfectly straight), and then adding the overhead torpedo launchers. Obviously the saucer section is sealed too. About 98% of the model is sealed with silicone; the idea is that if a bulb fails the model can be opened up again if needed. I think this kit has some QC-issues as the tolerances seems too high - leading to large gaps between pieces being prominent...

It's the home run now: some touch-ups of light leakage, and the decals then it's done!

Once everything dried, a test of al the lights (including a red LED strip inside the torpedo launchers that was added during the assembly process) to make sure everything works before the finishing touches are added. I recorded a quick video showing the entire lighting kit at work!

If I had one regret with the model - it is the fact the impulse manifolds doesn't light up as much as I would've liked... 😅

Surprisingly I'm rather on time with this milestone/update! Yesterday the last of the decals has been applied and the Miranda-class model has been put away until my Birthday in a few months.

We ended up using third-party decals because the supplied set was very low quality. We also got some additional detailing decals we would not've had otherwise. Surprisingly the decal we struggled with the most was the ones for the phaser turrets - which wasn't something I was personally expecting. Overall I'm pleased how the entire thing has came out: it looks super pretty (even with the lights off) and I could just look at it for ages! 👀

I think I will take a few photos when I do get this model on my birthday... but the project is basically done, and I'm surprised how quick it (relatively) took to build the model considering me and Dad started at the beginning of April!

@MMusselwhite She's beautiful! Miranda class is one of my #StarTrek favorites, and your care in this project really shows.
@DanielMReck I can’t take most of the credit! Dad was the main one who worked on the model, I just helped out with painting and wiring the electrics… believe me: she would look more in a sorry state of it was just me working on this… 😅 /gen

@MMusselwhite I was using the "royal your" to compliment both of you.

Seriously, you (royally) are a great model building team!
