However you feel about AI, it's a big part of the modern software landscape.

@ProPublica is hiring a two-year AI engineering fellow in collaboration with @lenfestinstitute.

We're not cheerleaders or naysayers; we want to explore ways that it might support the newsroom, while remaining anchored in real human problems and strongly adhering to our values, standards, and strict need for safety.

@ben @ProPublica The difficult thing about AI is that while the tech / math is really cool, it's been used (like so much other tech, but maybe more so) in not so good ways by powerful people with an agenda that's not necessarily good for the rest of us. Witness copyright, addiction etc etc

Wondering whether ProPublica can come up with new ways that can make good use of the tech, but in a much better way w/o the hurts. That would be a tall order, but would be amazing if it could be found....

The very first order of work would be to rely on free cultural works, consensually released, as the source of training - projects such as #CommonCorpus being a step in the right direction. Anything else is a copyright nightmare in the making, not even considering the ethical implications on straining the fair use policy to the detriment of the commons.
