This show on Sunday should be delightful. JUNE 8th.
Chris Williams was doing some really fun stuff blending electronics and trumpet when he came through a few years ago. Excited to see his work expanded in this new duo context.
"HxH describe their music as “electroacoustic,” but until recently the presence of Black musicians in this field has been greatly overlooked and largely ignored, making this phrase only partially appropriate. What HxH do really is to always be unpredictable. "

Emmanuel Lacopo put out a Julius Eastman tribute album so...that's a green flag.
I will TOOT my horn. Probably going to bust out some field recordings too.

The watch that ends the night showcase.
A wide-ranging bill that runs the gamut from Naomi & Jason playing their programmed and improvised lilting alien dirges ( https://jasondoellnaomimccarroll-butler.bandcamp.com/album/four-former-myrrh-formers-formed-her-horn-for-murmurs ) across Liam and Lukashevsky's more familiar song craft to Quinton Barnes new bombastic masterpiece.

This show tonight is gonna be like that scene from Sinners (2025) but local musicians.
This one tonight (June 24) is going to be very special!

Also the homies Jairus & Mustafa who are keeping Calgary & Edmonton (respectively) vibrating. Such lovely cats and it's always a delight to collab or share a stage.

And the sonic anomaly that is Egyptian Cotton Arkestra. The lineup of this band came together in part by accident - intended to be a one-off. The core quartet of myself, Lucas Huang, Markus Lake, & Ari Swan have now been 'getting together to work it out' as Fred Moten might say for almost a decade. The "songs" swing from groovy to ethereal with detours into noise. We just finished what will become our first album. It's a joy to play with these cats.
If all goes well we'll all maybe do a group jam together at the beginning or at the end. Gave little tasters last night but tonight their will be no appetizers just mains.
Also! In light of the rampant xenophobia it feels powerful to have no white people on the stage while playing St-Jean Baptiste.
Venture into the sonic realms of Suoni with the singular Brussels-based electric bassist Farida Amadou headlining an evening of audacious musical exploration. As a prelude, experience the stylistic forays of Egyptian Cotton Arkestra and the noise-drenched, jazzy territories charted by the duo…
